There is no rwd in the X1. It is either FWD or AWD (well unless you get the plug-in hybrid, then there is a short all-electric RWD option).

As for a good year to buy - I would say late 2018/early 2019. It is officially the pre-LCI model, so it would be cheaper, although it has most of the things that the LCI does, apart from the small exterior cosmetic changes and the bigger navigation.
