Hit and Run - Venting but also bizarre
So this morning I went to the gym as I do almost every Saturday morning and parked in the same spot I park in almost every single time.
Came out about an hour later and did a double take. Someone/something sliced the side of my car open. Sliced is the accurate word here...it ripped through the door like a can opener. Now that my rage has subsided (no cameras or anything else picked anything up and also the cops here refuse to even come out for something like this) I’m left truly wondering WTF could have done this. I’m thinking a large truck caught the side with something metal. I’m willing to give the asshole the benefit of the doubt that in a large enough truck they may not have even noticed (but still totally at fault for driving like a moron) I take my GT3 about 50% of the time. Had this happened to that car I wouldn’t be posting right now...I’d be on a 72 hour hold for the ungodly fury it would have sent me into. But the GT3 has dash cams, so I at least would have been hot on the trail of the a-hole.

I would be beyond pissed off if I walked out of the gym to that. Looks like a truck tried to back in and hitch hit you and bumper left dents just above it

I'm wondering if another car was backing in to the space next to you and a passenger opens a door and it caught your panel.
Or a pickup or car with bike rack. Dash cam - my dash cam sends alerts to my smart phone and record when parked and sensor activated |

I would think their would be parts on the ground from the other car or whatever, or paint marks on your car. Did you happen to park next to a trash dumpster?
It's possible someone vandalized it? shopping cart? |

Sounds like you are a wealthy dude. Shit happens. Move on with life. Make an insurance claim and get the door repaired by a qualified BMW auto body shop. Its just a car.

How would you feel if someone smashed your car everyday, and you had to pay out of pocket everytime?

First off... sorry. Had a similar thing happen at a Walmart to me weeks back. I was even parked on THE far end of the parking lot (where no one parks). Someone took a 1 inch gash out of my rear bumper.
But SF, man... you'd win the lottery before anyone would 'fess up and be responsible for that. Def agree, looks like a truck's rear extension caught the side of your car. |

Why can’t people respect one another’s stuff and own up when they make a mistake? Worse yet, perhaps they had the same attitude as this guy and said, oh he’s in a BMW, he can fix it.

First off... sorry that happened to you. For car people, this is almost like animal abuse.
Had a similar thing happen at a Walmart to me weeks back. I was parked on THE far end of the parking lot (where no one parks). Someone took a 1 inch gash out of my rear bumper. No note, no anything. Sucked. But SF, man... you'd win the lottery before anyone would 'fess up and be responsible for that. Def agree, looks like a truck's rear extension caught the side of your car. |

Is there a right turn right after your car? Looks to be like the back end of a lorry as clipped it as it was turning, I have seen a few vids of this happening, sometimes it drags the car down the road!

I don't do gym so this might be totally left field but isn't there way to maybe track down some people that went in during the hour you were inside & maybe one of them saw something?

It has nothing to do with the money. And the fact people think money is the primary principle in a situation like this is disheartening and perhaps part of why common decency in our society is diminishing. It has to do with the principle of someone damaging someone else's property and being either oblivious (best case scenario) or realizing what they did and deciding "Meh not my problem, let me keep going". If the person left a note, I would barely care.

Zero. Which is why I'm thinking it must be something like a hitch. Zilch. I even checked near-bye cars to see if they had dash-cams. No luck. Quote:
Have any solid DNA guys you can recommend? I still would love to know what exactly caused it (hitch?) but at the end of the day, it is what it is. I'm not going to spend any more time on it other than getting it repaired. The point was never to track down the individual but to share a moment of frustration that car guys (and all around decent human beings) understand best and also a sad reminder that there are some straight up garbage humans out there that do stuff like this to other folks without caring.
