2014 M3 will be a Diesel
I know, I know --- let the flame begin, but you'll see
Straight 6 Turbo Diesel All I can say is -- it's an inside source and they are sure. Personally, after driving some of BMW Diesels in Europe = I don't care .. I think it will be great. 450hp/450 lb.ft. torque:thumbsup2: |

Not in a million years. I'm sure that BMW will make an F3X "M340d" using the newly announced 3.0L tri-turbo engine and place it under their M Performance label, but I will eat my own ass if the F8X M3 lineup is powered by anything other than good 'ol gasoline.
There have been a lot people posting "inside source" knowledge on the next M3 powerplant -- you guys can't be all right

Yes, given the M5 'd' I would not rule out a 'd' version in a future M3 platform. But will not come to NA - bummer.

No way that much hp (low-mid 300s maybe). My 335d commuter already pushes out 425 lb/ft from 3L so I expect that could be boosted a fair bit.

We could see a high performance M-tuned diesel 4. Scott hinted at that in his X1 M35i post...
That same engine could find its way into the 1/3 perhaps.. Scott's quote: There are plans for M Performance vehicles of the X3 and X4 which given their entry segment status could use a more powerful four cylinder diesel application. |

There is no M5d, and there won't be an M3d in the F8X's lifespan. The move from NA to turbo is all the controversy that BMW has the stomach to withstand for this generation.

i heard it was actually gonna be run on corn oil. that's also from an inside source. you can quote me on it. haha. i'm just busting balls bro. i would love to see an M-variant in diesel. Would definitely be torquey. I'm just very skeptical.

There will be no diesel M3 for sure, but a high performance diesel F30 is more than likely. I don't think we will see the tri-turbo N57 (50d) being dropped into the F30 because there will be physically no room for it + xDrive! 381hp and 740NM cannot be safely transmitted to the road (as good as the DSC is) through a RWD on 255's unless you really know what you're doing. It's the torque more than anything. It's a squeeze to fit the 50d and xDrive into the F10 as it is because they do not have the room to switch it to a right hand drive version for a market such as the UK who drive on the correct side of the road, so I will not see it . A 335d which is now producing 313hp in its most potent form in the F10/F11 will be definitely on the cards sooner or later and maybe an "M40d" will be introduced but anymore than 630NM in a RWD may warrant the xDrive, so we're back to the drawing board.
The 8spd ZF will need to be toughened up too from 8HP70 to 8HP90 if it goes over 700NM of diesel torque which will probably add cost, if it doesn't take up more room and add weight as well, but I'm not sure on that. I do know that the 8HP70 weighs 90kg but that is my knowledge exhausted! I have attached two pictures of the 8HP70 and 8HP90 which can handle 700NM and 1000NM diesel torque respectively. The 6MT will disintegrate, as I believe (but cannot confirm) that its limit is 560NM.

Alreaday the current 335d is only offered with auto, and no manual because it can't handle the torque. Nothing surprising there. The M340d will then 100 % only get the 8 speed (sport-)auto.

Quote:
The 50d is putting down 381hp and 740NM. 40d = 340-350hp and 680-690NM? ^^ Wouldn't that warrant xDrive? Also, because the F30 is much lighter than the F10/F11 and X5/X6 in M50d form, would that possibly make the M40d quicker than the M50d. I'm not sure its going to happen and if it does, the advantages negligible over a 335d. Does anybody have anymore information on ZF's 8HP regarding dimensions and weight for the 8HP70 and 8HP90?

I'd expect both sDrive and xDrive versions, but not tripple-turbo tech. Just a more powerful twin-turbo engine, just a the M135i is getting a slightly more powerful N55 engine. ATM there is no 335d F30, so I'd say the up coming versions are the 330d Turbo, M340d Twin-Turbo, and the MX50d Tripple-Turbo will be for the models starting from 5 Series, so not for 3 Series and 4 Series.

I seriously doubt BMW won't bring the triple turbo diesel to the 3 series...
The x drive system is coming to the uk for F30, the 3 series is the most important car for BMW and the whole point of M Performance is to compete with Audi(nary)'s S models of which the S3 and S4 are probably the biggest sellers. Plus the fact M550d isn't coming to uk adds further to this. Lastly the only 5 series to outpace 3 series are the M division models (with the exception of 335d which hasn't been upped to match F10, yet), so if the F30 can cope with the engine size/power I see no reason for there not to be an M350d... It'd sell like hot cakes. There could even be room for an M350i too. But beyond all of this BMW need to make a new M1 and if it has to make a profit just make it very expensive and limited edition, something that devours the R8 and is hot on the tail of the McLaren |

OP was obviously joking since there is absolutely no chance whatesoever of a performance diesel being sold in the US.
However, I agree that a F3x "M350d" N57S model would be pretty cool. I doubt that they will do it since the "50d" model designation seems pretty unlikely for a sub-5 at this time. Although I suppose they could use a detuned version in an "M340d" or "335d". |

I know there's some rumors out there that are believable but come on. BMW are still having a hard time trying to convince people that M division should use FI over NA engines. That aside, just using common sense tells you that there is NO chance the next M3/4 will be diesel. It just wouldn't happen.

M have now confirmed the Triple-Turbo Diesel engine fits the F30 engine bay.
They have also registered the names M335 M340 and M350... Lets hope we get a diesel and a petrol option! :-) |
