Are these the worst cup holders in the industry?

First day out with my new-to-me X1 and my good travel mugs will not fit in the X1 cup holders. We bought them specifically for our 230i, which they fit perfectly (both in the console holders and the bottle storage in the door). They fit the Tiguan that I traded for this car.

Other than that, I quit like the vehicle, but it the passenger compartment storage is a downgrade from my faithful VW Tiguan, a 2010 model.

Not even close! Try Porsche Boxster or Mercedes SLK.

SAAB 9-3 and Volvo 850/S70/C70 i think are the worst. But those Porsche and SLK ones are pretty bad.
But we don't buy cars for their cup holders. 😁

Must agree regarding the SLK, I have the SLK55 and never use my cup holder over a fear of spilling something into the Nav unit

All the euros are pretty bad...but nothing beats the abysmal attempt at cup holders offered in French cars. Renault, Peugeot, Citroen — all can barely accommodate a cup much larger than an eggcup...and only one. Top it off with stiff suspension, and you soon learn to go caffeine free...and wear a camelback for hydration. That is all 😉😂😂

I’m ok with them, they hold my yeti and I like that they grip smaller cans too.

I liked that in my old e46, I could pull out the whole two cupholder console and put it in the dishwasher

Try these rubbish BMW cupholders in the e39 5 series or e38 7 series.

I definitely don't drive with anything in the Boxster cup holders. Pretty how they come out of the dashboard but wouldn't trust them moving.

X1 holders are ok?

Has anyone found an insulated travel mug (Yeti, Contigo, etc.) that fits the cup holder in the 2016 X1?

Thermos 16 oz stainless insulated travel mug fits well enough for me. It’s a great travel mug and not terribly expensive.

I had a euro-spec e60 for a while that didn't have cup holders in the front seating area. I had to use the ones built into the back seat arm rest if I wanted to carry my coffee tumbler to work with me.

As for my X1, I've been able to use the holders for a couple of different sized drink containers, but I think larger ones could cause some problems. Haven't tried too much yet.

I think I remember seeing something saying BMW has slightly different center dash configurations based on market. I think some came with a sliding cover for the cup holder area while others did not.

American cupholder tech is unmatched. Anything that high up tends to allow drink to slosh out.

I remember a car review of a sporty Vauxhall sports car (VX220).

In the review admiration was expressed for the cupholders, but then it was pointed out - "no these aren't cupholders these are the SEATS"

HydroFlask 16oz Tumbler fits like it was made for the X1 cupholder. FWIW, my X1 has the sliding cover.
