Does anyone here watch NASCAR?

I was just curious because it's America's most popular sport but seems to get flamed a lot on these forums. If you do watch it, what draws you to it? I really could never get a grip on why it's so popular.

Example: In the "Professional Racing Discussion" forum (this forum), it says "Formula 1, ALMS, Le Mans, IRL, WRC, etc..." and NASCAR isn't listed.

I watch it...only because I like ANY racing. Once you learn about the engineering and what the crew chief does it becomes interesting. Those crews are the real superstars IMHO.

I fucking love NASCAR, just went to the race in chicago. I don't know why i like it so much, but i haven't talked to anyone who hasn't been to one and enjoyed the hell out of it. I think no matter who you are, you should watch the restrictor plate races at talladega and daytona, they are intense.

Driving around an oval never really impressed me. If I do watch Nascar, its on the road courses and then everyone says "its not a real race".

I hated Nascar and never got the point of it, until I drove the CA Speedway with the BMWCCA HPDE which has the back straight, and Turns 1 and 2 of the banking then dives into the infield.. Since then I have a new found respect for ovals and NASCAR drivers

Yeah the oval portion sucks but like I mentioned before if you look at the engineering that goes on to get those cars to go fast around an oval of varying sizes it gets real interesting.

I thought I'd give NASCAR a chance after I moved down to North Carolina, and Montoya made the switch. But after about the 3rd race, I just found myself fast forwarding through the race.

I do respect that there are a lot of really good drivers in NASCAR now, but the racing doesn't do much for me.

Its just not my cup of tea...however....respects to NASCAR drivers...I found ovals are tricky from GT5P...since you have to lift off sometimes.....

I think this goes similar to non-F1 fans....

some regulations and engineering are just too complicated and some people just not bothered to watch....and not all F1 season are exciting...e.g. Valencia last year...

lol same, i hate when you lift off to much and get understeer if your car is setup poorly.
I love the fact that a slightly modded M5 can prob. beat a nascar in a race, w/ the ac on.

Valencia last year
Singapor (night race) was cool just because it was at night, but the race was pretty dull too (minus the flames, sparks and glowing brakes).

I do not watch that Non-Athletic-Sport-Centered-Around-Rednecks. I don't get the appeal of the ovals, but props to the crews. I just find ALMS so much more interesting.

Lol I haven't heard that joke in a while. Also, did you know how NASCAR got it's name? When a guy showed the first ever stock car to his friend, his reaction was "This here is a naaas car".

It's basically a straight line race.

to be honest....it was exciting because it was the first time at night....(it'll be less special once more and more tracks like abu dahbi....malaysia...australia...and some other asian and middle east tracks joining....)

plus piquet jr's crash caused the safety car and ferrari's pit stop drama....it'll be a dull race....i wun be expecting too much this year....

and probably valencia this year might be more exciting than singapore...

Yeah the ALMS or DTM is my favorite type of racing to watch....watching NASCAR is like giving me sugar-free, non-caffeinated Cola - Its liquid but ultimately not as satisfying.

I'll watch the road races. Pick up a Race Tech or Racecar Engineering magazine and you'll probably be a lot more interested. Plus, I like listening to Chad Knauss. That guy pretty much knows everything there is to learn about NASCAR racing.

I've been to a CART (yes when it was still called CART) oval race and it wasn't exciting... I was falling asleep through most of the race. It didn't help I had to wake up early, but I didn't enjoy it at all. But everytime I've been to an ALMS race (twice at Long Beach) I've always been excited; mainly because of the variety of cars, sounds, etc.

A NASCAR road race is more exciting than ANY F1 race. I was asleep for a good 20 minutes watching that crap they call racing (German GP)

The competition at a NASCAR race is more exciting than a F1 race. F1 hardly ever has any passing. Although I do enjoy most any type of racing in person or on TV.

The cars are built not to handle incredibly well. They do this to keep it competitive. They also some what resemble 'cars' and they can actually beat and bang on eachother without destroying one another. They're 3500lb cars with 850hp and lack the incredible grip of F1 and indy cars. i enjoy F1 but they hardly resemble cars, to me they are go go-carts on steroids, and that's cool and all but i don't find it all that exciting to watch other than to admire their incredible speed.
Soccer is to Europe is what Football is to America.
