b58 Vanos

So my 18 440 GC just had its Vanos replaced. 8K miles. Misfiring. Felt like driving 3cyl. Check engine and "drive moderately" message. BMW told me to drive it for a week to see if it would just go away...it didn't.

searched and couldn't find anything. thought i'd say something in case others have the issue.

Still love the car and i'm hoping she's as good as new when i get her back!

Please post the work order. Will be helpful to see the parts replaced and diagnostic comments.

You can count me as a member of this club. In late March my '18 340i with 3,900 miles started throwing a drivetrain malfunction warning. It would go away on restart, happened for a day and then stayed on. In my case the vehicle seemed to act normal.

Took it in, picked up a loaner and three days later picked it up after hours with the work order showing the exact same part number as sttlondon for an ACTUATOR, VANOS.

In my case the tech said he just needed the part and it would be an easy fix. Got that story two days in a row until I was sent a txt that it was done. The part appears to be universal to just about all b-series engines, bit annoyed it took three days to get the part. But the car came back in good order, no issues since after ~1,600 miles.

No engine drop, the work order was descriptive:

VANOS INTAKE ADJUSTER STICKING. CHARGED BATTERY SHORT TEST. FAULT STORED FOR INTAKE VANOS UNCONTROLLABLE COLD START. I LEVEL AT 17-XX. REMOVED COWL PANELS. REMOVED STRUT BRACE. REMOVED STRUT BRACE PANEL. CHECKED CONNECTION AT VANOS INTAKE ADJUSTMENT UNIT. CHECKED CONNECTOR PINS FOR DAMAGES. DETERMINED VANOS ADJUSTMENT SOLENOID FAULTY (DWT 0.6) REMOVED AND REPLACED INTAKE VANOS ADJUSTMENT SOLENOID AND SPRING RETAINING CLIPS. 11 36 656

Part numbers listed were 11-36-7-614-288, ACTUATOR, VANOS and 11-12-8-642-177, FIXING CLAMP

I think they also performed an istep update although it wasn't listed in the work order. Just about all my settings were blown away. That was super annoying since this thing seems to hold as much data and configs as my smart phone. I'll have to remember to record settings next time. First BMW, first trip to service. I should have asked them to perform the first maintenance, definitely early, but could have saved another trip and memory wipe in a few months.

Like the original poster said though, I still love this thing. MPPSK from the port, this thing is a beast. Previous fun car was an MR2 Turbo, very different beast!

Not common. Mine needed to be replaced before I could even take the car out of the shop.
Seem to be just a very low percentage of defective ones. Don't worry about it.

P.s. Besides that it is not true that the engine needs to be removed to replace. Might have been like that earlier, not anymore.
