2006 BMW 325i vs. 1980 Camaro Z28 on a track....
Talking to a friend last night. We've decided to find a track in the spring and see who can get the better time.
I don't have the sport package, I do have the 6 spd manual. I don't have many specs on the Camaro other than it's an automatic Z28 and that it has been worked on and restored quite extensively by my friend. I think he'll have me on the straights but I might be able to edge him out on cornering. Should be fun... something to look forward to for the spring (aside from the Montreal BMW driver training posse). Any predictions? I think I'll have to choose the track wisely. |

i agree 100000% especially for American cars in the early 80s. and those muscle cars which were castrated then. |

Hmmm...is his car modded at all? If so, I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the F-body cars at the race track. I've seen some pretty respectable times out of both Rustangs, and bitchin Camaros at Summit Point. Of course you do have twenty plus years of suspension development on him.

A good mix of cars would be fun. Everyone could go around a few times, then compare each car's best lap time like on Top Gear. Something to think about possibly for the spring. I'd like to race my mom's A3 with DSG around the track too, but I don't think she'd be game for either driving it, or lending it out to be raced. Hmmmm.... I'd like to see if I could take down an IS250 too. This could be a pretty good event. By going around the various car boards I bet we could get a pretty good assortment of cars going. Something to think about.... |

An '80 Camaro had stock 3.8 V6 (courtesy of Buick), or Chevy 305/350 small blocks. I think max HP was in the 150-175 range. However, your friend probably dropped a small block crate motor in there good for at least 300hp in modern trim. Or, he could've dumped a rat motor in their (454 crate stroked to 503ci) which could be pulling 400+ at the rear axle. You wouldn't stand a chance.
Also, it's just as easy to beef up the suspension in those cars to make it a track special. Basically, for little $$ you can turn an old Camaro into an inexpensive race car. It's also a beautiful car when restored to original (sorry, I've always loved the look of the old 1970's era F-bodies). Where the Bimmer will excel is in overall driving dynamics, comfort, refinement and the ability to do more with less. But a stock E90 just isn't purpose-built for racing. Af you need help getting your car ready for this, I think Bhattimalik can assist you.

The 1980 Camaro Z28 is not that quick by today's standards. It had quarter-mile times in the low 16 seconds @ 85 mph. I used to consistently beat them at the KCIR drag strip with my 1984 normally aspirated 2.8L Inline-6 Supra with open exhaust.
Not to say that modified chevy small/big blocks are not scary--they are! The handling for that model year Camaro will not compare to your BMW. |
