Tire size question

2018 X2 28i 4 DR AWD
I'm currently using summer tires Pirelli P-Zero 225/40R20 and would like to buy some good condition, used winter tires on rims. Will a 245/50R20 tire on rims with the same bolt pattern (5x112) fit on my X2 or is it too wide?

Use a tire site like willtheyfit.com and punch in the numbers. What's more important is the offset of the winter rims, as well as the PCD. For example: If you have genuine Audi 5X112 wheels, most likely the offset etc will be good, but the PCD is too small so you'll never get them on the car or will have to go find someone to drill it out.

Getting new rims is not as simple as you think. The above website will show you how much different the new vs the old rims, and you should be able to make an educated decision if there's enough room to fit.

Just plugging in the numbers of the new vs the old tire, the new tire is 8.63% too big which will throw off your speedometer by a good chunk. General rule of thumb is 5% variance. So if it was my choice (forgetting about the wheels themselves) the tires are too big.

Many thanks rice-rocket88!

Taken from wheel-size.com:
2018 X2 28i 4DR AWD
Tire: 225/40ZR20
Rim: 8Jx20
Centre Bore: 66.6
PCD: 5x112
Thread size: M14x1.25

Wheels and rims in online ad:
Tire size: 245/50R20
PCD: 5x112

I used the website you suggested and got the same result as you did. They do look too large with a variance of 8.3% is too great.

wheel-size.com lists all tire and rims sizes available for my model (17"-20"). Is it your opinion that I can go down to another rim size (as those listed specifically for my model and year such as a 225/45ZR19 or 225/50R18? Since I like the look of the 20" rims on my car now, perhaps I should stick with a taller tire on a smaller rim as listed above. Does this sound correct?

Curious: Why are you looking at going to a bigger tire on the same size wheel (20") for a winter set?

If it were me I'd be looking for a narrower option as 1st choice but definitely wouldn't go any bigger than my summer set.... that's if your main objective in having a winter set is for better traction in slush, snow, &/or icy hardpack.

Yes if you have the regular 28i model then you can go as low as 17, maybe even 16" wheels (honestly I think I might have 16 on my wife's X1 but I can't remember right now). You want a "fat" tire for potholes, ie the actual rolling diameter of the rubber stays the same, but the inner wheel (and therefore the rubber/tire) gets bigger to compensate. I wouldn't go "taller" unless you are trying to save your car from potholes. My first set of 19" winter tires took damage from a vicious pothole... last year I got another good deal on 18" tires so I am running 18" winters now.

Going back to your last statement.. if you're looking for 20" winter tires, then yes I would go up a size in terms of rubber to help cushion the blows. Also remember 20" tires cost much more money than 19 and 18 etc. So if you were to try to keep something similar on 20" wheels I would look for
225/45/20
215/45/20
215/50/20
etc etc... again, don't be surprised if you can't find those sized tires so you might have to pick alternatives like I listed 3 different variations.

Appreciate the responses from both of you!

Rich: was considering a bigger tire only because that was the tire size found on a used tire/rim site online.

Rice-rockett: I should have used the term "fat", not tall. Understand better that a fatter tire will cushion more on the pot holes.

I'm in Canada and can have some strong winters here. Am now looking at an 18" rim, possibly a 225/55R/18. Using the website I can now calculate any potential error in the speedo.

Last question (hopefully!): Do you anticipate any handling issues from going from an offset of 50 on my 20" rims (EJx20 ET50), to an offset of 35 on the tires/rims (8JJx18 ET35) I'm considering?

Yeah I figured that's why you were fishing around about taller/wider tire sizes.

Good luck!

Weird, I thought I replied yesterday.. +35 is where I think it should have been from the factory, the wheels should line up nicely with the fenders.. the rear will have more room. No problem with that offset. If you get really really wide rubber ie 255 then it might stick out a bit, but if we're going with what we've discussed here in the 225 or smaller range then no problem!

-- Hope you're not in Calgary now.. that's some snow building up..

I am in Montreal area. I keep the same oem tire size with my 19" rims.
You can look for 19" instead of 18" (as you are going from 20").

Oem size is 225/45/19. I have no issue during the winter and spring with pot holes so far. They are non-runflat (or go flat as some others say ) tho. It helps.

If have to replace them I would consider 245/45/19. It's only 2.6% bigger. It won't affect your speed too much.
