Brake pad replacement question
Hi all
my 17 X1 has 22K miles that needs a brake pad replacement. Do I need to replace the discs and do I need to replace the sensors ? Can I regular mechanic like Midas, Meineke replace the brake pads ? My only concern is deleting the warning from computer if anyone can replace the pads/discs ? thanks for your answers. |

The brake rotors (discs) can be resurfaced if they're in good condition and they still have sufficient thickness to them, however nowadays most places will simply replace them because the cost of new rotors is relatively low. I have done many brake replacements myself and just order new rotors each time.
You will need to replace the sensors as they're meant to be one time use. If the sensor was tripped and the car is telling you it needs new brake pads, then the sensor will need replacing. Most competent independent shops should be able to handle doing brake pads and rotors on the X1. If you have a place you trust and have had good experiences with in the past definitely take it there versus a dealer. The warning can be reset easily from inside the car and again, most competent shops will be able to do it. |

Exactly what Alex said.. anyone can (even yourself) change the pads and/or rotors. No special tools needed nor software or programming. at 22K Unless your rotors look like crap, I wouldn't change them. Also you can use the menus to reset your brake check mileage, but if that sensor is tripped you need a new sensor before you can do that. Google how to reset those warnings, I've seen youtube videos in the past.

thanks for the answers
Dealer asks for $880, private BMW mechanic asks for $830 and Brakes on Demand (they come by to replace your brakes in your place) asks for $525 with Zimmermann Rotors and Akebono brake pads including the wear sensor. Private BMW dealer's quote includes brake fluid flush - I'm not sure if I need to do it. |

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...hoCT-kQAvD_BwE So for $300 and shipping Brakes on Demand is really only making $200 labor off of you which is very fair (and I mean cheap). You didn't mention what your independent mechanic was including, only that the dealer might be including. Also you didn't mention a FULL brake job, or just a Front brake job. As skyline put it.. brake fluid flush is timed in the idrive for once every 2 years. A bit of overkill if you just daily drive your car, but if the brakes are done with only 22K miles on it you might be having that premature brake wear everyone is talking about. My wife's X1 is still on it's stock pads close to 40K on it. Others have managed to negotiate with dealers saying that's pretty premature.. your car is under warranty for like 4 yrs 50K, normally it's not a coverable item, but if it's wearing "too fast" you might get something or at least a heavy discount from the dealer. $880 in Boston I would think it's only a front brake job and a brake flush if they did mention it. Prices from the dealer are pretty steep.. Last edited by rice_rocket88; 10-07-2020 at 04:15 PM.. |

Ooof for some reason I got the wrong "kit" and there isn't one.. but it would be:
$67.52 per front rotor $48.16 per rear rotor $70.36 for akebono front pads $58.19 for akebono rear pads and it looks like the sensor $29.13 for the front sensor |

Akebono brake pad kits come with the wear sensor so you can save a few bucks by not buying it separately.

Here is break down from independent BMW dealer - This is only for front brake job:
$213 Labor Free brake flush $339 2 Discs $177 Brake Pad set $35 sensor $4 Screws I don't know the manufacturer of parts but assume they are original BMW equipment. Brakes on Demand also offers semi brake flush in $525 quote but there is a first time customer $50 discount so it comes down to $485. Otherwise they offer full brake flush for $125. They just replied me saying that they are able to delete the brake replacement warning after job done. 2 Year / 24K miles warranty included for their job. I will go with Brakes on Demand, hope they are good enough. |
