Clunk noise when going over bump...

Hey folks. Just wondering if anyone has similar issue with a clunk noise that seems to come from the front left suspension when you go over speed bumps a tad faster as the car drops over the bump. TIA for your input.

You could try getting one or two people to press up and down on the left wing whilst you look under the wheel arch.

yup. apparently its a known issue with the f48. I took mine in and it was replaced under warranty. It was the wishbone that failed.

There's a TSB and warranty repair for this

Dealer replaced both bushing and wishbone under warranty, and the noise disappeared

I'm also experiencing a crunching sound over speed bumps with a decent amount of speed in my 2017 X1. It's at the dealer now being looked at.

My car also has this problem and the dealer want me to pay all the repair cost which is too much. Model year is 2016. My car is out of warranty but there is a TSB for this issue. Still do I have to pay the repair cost?

How far out of warranty are you? Had you ever reported a similar issue / sound in the past to the dealer? How much are they asking for the repair.. is it the "wishbone bushing replacement"?

Legal warranty period is for 2 years and it is ended about 1,5 years ago. No, I have this issue since November. Never had any issues like this before. The dealer wants me to pay about 1000 Euros for the repair. To replace the complete wishbones and bushings.

BMW Hong Kong don't have any outstanding TSB and i have also run out of warranty on my car.

I've ordered the following part and will try to replace it at my local mechanic
https://www.bimmerworld.com/Front-Co...0500135HD.html

Hopefully this will fix it and be less than repair at BMW.

So many weak/vulnerable parts in a premium SUV/SAV. I had my engine mount replaced just in the first year. And after this fix, now the engine has started to shake again. Also heard that transmission mount is also weak. Then two years ago the panoramic roof sunblind fell off from its place and they had replaced the whole roof frame. Now I have a rattling roof headlining. And just three months ago the car's right door armrest cover swelled. Yes, that's right. Then this wishbone issue. Shame to BMW.

Can anyone provide a link to the TSB for the lower control arm issue?

Don't have a link (it would be within the BMW private domain, in any case), but here's what I have:

TSB for knocking noise from engine compartment. Cause is a damaged right side engine mount. Service bulletin #B22 02 17.

And there another TSB for creaking noise when cornering. Cause is the rubber transmission mount rubs on the aluminum housing. Service #B22 01 17.

Third TSB (ref unknown) says to change both front left and right control arms with a revised control arm for certain production dates — original parts both defective from factory

I had both my front wishbones replaced under warranty to cure a knock noise on first moving the vehicle from rest.

Knock on the near side te occurred after 6000 miles and near side wishbone replaced again due to one of the bushes failing and allowing metal to metal contact.

Pretty crap part in my oppinion the bushes probably coming out of the Jelly Tots factory🤔

I'm glad to hear there is finally a TSB for this, I'm going to have to add this to my list of items before my warranty is out this summer for repair.

I just had my front control arms and bushings replaced and...it still clunks. It's maddening. I'm taking my car back in on Monday to get them to check everything that's been mentioned in this post.
I went to an independent garage here in Colorado because my car was 1K miles out of warranty and the dealer said they said the 'could' do a courtesy warranty repair, but they wouldn't. Nice, huh? They know how to win customers!

Back to the clunking. This '16 F48 makes so many noises! The clunking over speed bumps, irregular roads (only on the right side!); the tail gate seems to have its own catalogue of different sounds it makes depending on the terrain; and I swear, there's another clunking that happens *sometimes* when I brake suddenly. (Don't get me started about how 'grabby' these brakes are).
This is about my 10th BMW over the last 30 years and I've never been as disappointed as I have been with this car. Granted, it's a glorified Mini Clubman, and I bear responsibility for the purchase, but damn BMW, this car sucks.
It's for sale, BTW!

Anyone attempt this on their own? I just finished the upper right engine mount, I think I have bad wishbones as well. Doesnt look too difficult, how would you diagnose this to be sure its the wishbone bushings before tearing apart?

2017 X1 X Drive @ 97k miles.

I have the same issue with my 2018 X1. Will go to the dealer and advise them to replace the wishbones.

Hope it is warranty.

My 2017 f48 developed a clunking noise front drivers side. It had recently been in to have the top suspension mount replaced, to solve creaking noise when maneuvering at very low speed. Turned out they neglected to tighten a nut on one of the suspension components. It's fine now.
