Oil opinion
Does anyone here find 0w20 a bit thin for our x1? I'm wondering if BMW decided to use this grade to get better gas mileage. I normally stick to what the BMW engineers suggests, but thinking using 0w30 or 5w30 for summer. What's your our opinion?

You are indeed correct...all the "tricks"(like defaulting the driving mode to ECONO and making mode not part of the driver's profile that could be set to your preference) are aimed at improving MPG so BMW can sell higher powered gas guzzlers for high profit. If you look at the owners' manual you will find that oils up to 0W40 are approved for use in the B48 engine....I'm running that weight in warmer months, since it can get seriously hot here in the summer time.

I agree with what spitpilot says; thinner oils are just one of the many tools BMW uses to bump those mileage figures as high as possible. I live in Western PA's "snowbelt" region where it neither gets ridiculously hot or cold on a annual basis. After completing the engine run-in period, I switched from from 0W-20 to 5W-30 TwinTurbo LL-01. I want as much synthetic goodness lubricating that turbo when running and think the 30 weight end of this oils specification will help this oil film remain intact without cooking out (coking) from heat soak after engine shutdown.

So for those using 5w30, what are you getting as far as mpg?
Since I've been using factory 0w20, I'm getting roughly 27-31 mpg depending on speed and traffic. |

Forgot there for a min that this is an "oil thread"....owners' manual says 0W-40 is OK...and that's what I'll be using...gets hot up here in the desert in the summer months! |

5w30 can impact engine life?
Quote:
Question for those who actually uses BMW 5w30 longlife01. Are you guys in the US with a BMW X1 Petrol version (F48), there should only be Petrol version in N.A? If so, can you comment on any negative observation with the use of 5W-30 TwinTurbo LL-01? My problem is that in Canada, some dealer went to extra length (even after I showed them the manual and many other tech sources) to tell me that they recommends 0W20 LL14 FE+ and they stopped short on commenting whether 5W-30 TwinTurbo LL-01 can affect the warrantee. How is your experience with 5W-30 TwinTurbo LL-01? thanks |

I was running BMW 0W20 LL-17 FE+ for ~3k miles for better flow during the colder winter months. I know the owner's manual states LL-14 FE+, but the dealer handed me the LL-17 instead. I was annoyed as I didn't realize the difference until I got home, but saw LL-17 FE+ is compatible with the B46 engine, per newtis.info, and the Parts Dept said this is the oil used to service their X1s, so I decided to go with it. I just swapped back to Liqui Moly 5W30 yesterday. When running 5W30, I do notice a slight drop in average MPG (~0.4 - 0.7 mpg) if the OBC is taken as accurate. The engine also seems to run ever so slightly quieter on 5W30, but that could just be all in my head. In the end, I opt to run the LL-01 spec 5W30 oil for the improved engine protection claims. I use LM 5w30. The trick is to let it warm up for at least ~10 minutes.
I initially had the BMW OEM oil (0w30) and I saw no change in MPG. However, I will echo that the engine seems a tad quieter. I have stayed away from BMW OEM oil and their intervals (I do it every 5K miles). GL!

I actually just went back and fourth with this in my 3 series, same engine though.
I ended up going with 0w-40 and it feels smoother for sure. I have always tried to go easy on my cars until they are warm. From here on out I'll be doing my own changes and sticking with 0w-40. I have used this weight in my VW and Audi turbo cars and they all have done very well with it all year here in so-cal 5K intervals for me, which is about once per year.
