Got one for the wife. I love driving it coming from an MDX and being 6'4". I can actually fit in this thing which surprised me. The xdrive is also pretty good if I compare it to the superhandling awd of the mdx. Acceleration is good, steering nifty, fun little ride. Can't go wrong with this bang for buck! My first BMW! Hopefully I'll get my M4 next...

I agree with you. FWIW, my dealer does not give me x1's. They know I hate them and won't drive them. I'll take a 320 with no options over an x1. FWD is no bueno in my book.

There are very good driving FWD vehicles these days. Sure you may not like the inherit dynamics but it doesn't automatically make them all into bad drivers. I generally shy away from large FWD sedans but smaller cars could benefit. I have been driving MINIs for 18 years and the handling and road holding manners are outstanding. I too prefer RWD but don't automatically disqualify a car as "No bueno" just because the power is coming from the front...

Where this car shines best is in xDrive taking sharp corners with such ease and pure bliss. Sitting in it is very comfortable for the price point. You wonder what's the point of spending 10-20 thousand more on a higher end car while the X1 is so sublime to drive.

I wouldn’t call it sublime to drive but it is good value for the money. It’s not for everyone, just a segment. For that segment it’s a good vehicle. Plus my dog never complains and loves the ride.

Agreed, for the segment I think it's great. Much nicer than the competition. Would still rather have an X3 or X5 of course, but I've been really pleased so far.

This sums up our feelings on our X1. We were very satisfied with ours but just wanted something different and the time was right to get the X3. As mentioned, we like both vehicles.

I agree. After 4 model years I'm surprised that BMW hasn't done something to improve the standard seats. They are an odd size and shape which was called out in most of the reviews that I read. As mentioned, we really liked our X1 and adjusted to the front seats but they were the weak link in the vehicle.

Well the award is for best luxury compact SUV and not for "most inspiring BMW". As a person who is currently in the market, I have test driven the XC40, Q3, Seat ateca and VW Tiguan and I can definitely say that the X1 was the best all-rounder of them all.

I love my X1 Xdrive2.8i
I still don't understand the nonsensical nomenclature the Germans are giving to vehicle these day. 2.8 with a 2.0L ? It's not getting the credit it deserves, not from BMW afionados anyway. It's front wheel drive based like the Mini but with X drive, it can route all the power to the rear wheel. It's got more passenger room than the X3 in 4 of 6 categories. It's still made in Germany (if that matters anymore) and it's a lot less expensive than the X3 Also, my car's standard front seats do not look anything like the pictures shown. The bottom cushions are much longer. They're not extendable like the M Sport version but a lot longer than the American and Japanese counterpart. The only 2 things I was disappointed were lack of standard Apple Car Play for 2018 model and the cheap steering wheel "leather" (non M Sport model) I would caution anyone buying not to get overzealous on the options as it will jack up the price to above X3 territory. It's worth considering an X1 if you're shopping for a Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford, Chrysler products at $30K+ Maybe you can buy one for your maid or your gardener so it looks good in your driveway. Traded in the wife's GTI Autobahn and picked up the M-Sport X1 for my wife. It was important to us both to have and SUV that was fun to drive and had a fair amount of luxury for the price. It's the perfect SUV for us. I've been really impressed on the fit and finish and just how great it feels in the road. It's fun to drive, though I do wish it made a better sound.
Just needed a fun sporty AWD vehicle and the X3/5/7 are all more vehicle than we need. Now my Motorhead side would have really loved the X3 M40i or the X3M but hey that's what I bought an M2C for.

I see a number of comments about F48 weird or vague handling and am honestly surprised. I know the X1 does not have the rear wheel drive feel of BMW salons but I still find the handling is direct with good feel. I wonder is steering settings vary by market or the car is hyper sensitive to tyre choice. My car came with 18” Pirelli rfts (I will change the rft’s as soon as I can) and am slightly concerned the wrong replacement choice could result in the “weird” handling. Do you think it may be tyres or different steering set-up for Northern American, or possibly just M models?

Before I bought my BMW X1 (only xDrive available in Canada) ~1 month ago, I test drove the Infiniti QX50 and Lexus NX 200t in the same class. As soon as I drove the X1, I knew it was the one because the experience was so precise and creamy! The other cars were loaded with all electronic doodads, but that did not outweigh the feel of the X1.
Personally, I would have looked into the X3, but my wife wanted something smaller. I am not disappointed in any way with buying X1. |

X1 is honestly a nice car as much as I hate to admit it.
The old one drove like a proper 3 series. The new one however is better for your wife. Bigger, with a proper 'command' seating. The X drive version can send thé power to the rear when necessary. Cabin was nice and all features available. However, I think Tiguan R line and Audi Q3 are just as nice and nicer. The X1 really is a soulless BMW. X2 maybe is better? Doubtful. Nice car though. |

The MB GLA is a jittery harsh riding station wagon and the interior looks very cheap. The Tiguan looks nice but the only person I knew that owned one had a blown up turbo at 50K miles |

Your neck is your blind spot detector. As pointless as it is on such small car, the park distance assist is equally pointless. Hone your skill, buddy, it's you who drives the car not the other way around.
