Thought on X2's towing capacity?
Are any of you are towing with your X2? I am thinking about buying a small camper trailer to tow around this summer with my X2 M35i but I'll not sure if the car can handle it.
Online research on the X2's towing capacity has largely lead to dead ends although I found an Australian autotrader website indicating the capacity is between 725kg and 200kg depending on whether the trailer is braked or not. Of course BMWUSA's website doesn't list any official specs and the dealer won't comment. Have any of you used your X2 to tow? The camper I'm considering is pretty light (2500 lbs) but I'm not sure it's a good idea. |

I would go with the data from the X1... so they are good for 3700lbs. Seeing as the car has more grunt and I would "hope" it would be more beefy transmission and cooling capabilities and it would be insane to say it's any LESS. Transmission and cooling is really the big scare from towing. Seeing as you wouldn't be doing a huge road trip (I'd hope you aren't planning on climbing Mt. Washington with it) then you should be fine

I have purchased a draw-tite hitch and t-one wiring harness from etrailer and fitment is great
I've tried pulling a heavy* rental home depot utility trailer with an atv and it seemed a bit heavy for the car. Haven't tried since but I'm sure with a lighter trailer it would do better. |

The weak link in towing is transmission and engine cooling, followed by brakes. I would never tow trailer with small SUV. Even if you don't cook the transmission, the wear and tear of towing a trailer is likely to shorten the life.

So the x2 did just fine towing. I have upgraded brakes and just drove the car slower than I usually do without a trailer. I think it helped that it was a dual axle trailer, you can see based on the suspension that tongue weight is light on the car.
