Rear Fog Lights

Do we have them on the BMW X2? How to activate?

Yes we do.
The rear switch position is just the one below the front fog switch.

Having a USA vehicle made in Germany, we have no switch. Any chance on part number to swap in?

OK.

I just spent the last hour or so and added Rear Fog Light capability to my X2 M35i.

It was pretty easy. VERY HAPPY WITH RESULTS!

Found a few articles, but this one was spot on in regards to CODING: https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1628029.

Regarding how to make that switch become 'alive', 5 minutes of time.

so I am a little dense. First in the Saabs and Volvo I had that had the feature only the driver side light lit not the side next to the shoulder it looks like your picture they are both lit. Okay that was the easy question. So am I to surmise the switch is there under the blank plat and by removing something from the back of the blank plate you can now push it in and activate the switch? The only part that makes sens is the coding part. It used to like that feature on my Swedish cars. If I get daring and try this I think I will need another blank switch since I have leased this one.

Hi.

That blank plate without logo is actually the switch. You just have to remove the three nubs so you could then depress the switch, soft touch, no click.

Behind the switch is an LED and two protruding rubber bumps with PCB surface mount switches behind them.

I am going to see if I can just get another switch with logo. The best I can find is Euro complete assembly for 120 bux.

What a great hack! I am doing this asap.

Some observations:
- looks like you can code the left and right rears individually
- looks like both bulbs are already installed (!)

In the Volvo, only one bulb is installed, on the driver's side. This is intentional, and that bulb is somewhat brighter than normal. From your photo it doesn't look like they're brighter on ours? OTOH, that code says "PWM", pulse width modulation, so perhaps increasing/decreasing that coding will also tweak the brightness.

I like the rear fog in my Volvos for visibility, but it has one magical side effect - the car behind immediately drops back. It's extra-safe in fog, but I sometimes use it anyway. I think it's the bright, asymmetric look that makes it work.

The only drawback of a single light is that sometimes people report they get pulled over for a defective taillight. Has not happened to me.

Yes, it is brighter! From 13.6 to 13.7V.

And I like that I can use it as a BACK OFF lighting mechanism for people who follow so closely.

Wow, thanks for that link! I actually haven't tried expert coding on bimmercode. Maybe you can explain that a little. Ie when I was using INPAS I just had to find the line in the code and change either a value or mostly active to non active. I followed the link and I can see it.. but not exactly sure what to do. Help? Also how did you pop out the switch, just pry it? Looks like another project to do for fun!

Sorry for reviving this thread.

Did you change the voltage in the expert mode from the default to 13.7V?
I saw it but I was not sure if I should change it or not to make it brighter.
I think that mine is at 13.6V too or 13.5V maybe.

Also, did you change the bulbs for LED or you have the stock bulb?

I am using it as a back off mechanism too.

Thanks for the info. I put mine to 13.7V today. It was daytime, so I don't know if it makes a difference.

The initial value was at 13.4V. I think that I changed it at the correct place in Bimmercode. The max value I saw in there was 14V. Nothing between 13.7 and 14. However, I saw a value "100%" too.

I made the big jump from 13.4 to 13.7 because I swapped the bulbs for LED. The LED bulb voltage is from 12V to 24V, so I believe it won't be an issue.

xcelir8bmw and ejw2011 - thank you both for the blank button mod and coding. Button only took a few minutes to modify. Inner trunk lights are now additional brake lights and become fog lights with a push of a button.

Angry 2021 BMW X2 not wired for rear-fog lights in North America

On my 2021 X2 M35i, I replaced the North American OEM light switch with the European OEM one, so that I would have an actual rear-fog light switch with the correct icon on it. I also got the change "Nicht-Verbaut" to "Verbaut" part of the coding to work so that when you pushed the switch the rear-fog light indicator showed in the instrument panel. I tried all of the various coding options but the lights still didn't come on. Took the car into a garage that specializes in BMW ECU engine tunings and they told me that although the bulbs for the rear-fog lights had been installed at the factory in Germany, there was no wiring to the bulbs, at least not in North America for the 2021 X2 model year. They said this was "typical BMW". I don't understand though why they would bother installing the bulbs but not finish the wiring to them?

Kind of surprised that they would not have wiring.. as having a different wiring loom for each country seems weird. (Assuming in europe it is required to have the rear foglights). I don't know how that specialist you took it to checked it so easily and feel that they might have just given you that answer. I guess if they saw the coded info is right and no light it is an easy answer to tell you there is no wiring.

Still if you coded things right and all the indicators were on.. then I guess there's not much you can do unless you start taking things back and tracing/ volt meter test.

Did you get it to work? I have a 2018 x1, in Canada. Wondering if all the wiring was there.
