2016 BMW X1 Earns Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS

BIMMERPOST NEWS
2016 BMW X1 Earns "Top Safety Pick+" from IIHS

COMMENTS

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 26, 2016 … The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety today named the 2016 BMW X1 a “Top Safety Pick+”, the Institute’s highest rating, continuing the company’s long-standing commitment to offering class-leading safety with each new model. In order to earn “Top Safety Pick+”, a car must receive a rating of “good”, the Institute’s highest rating, in all five crashworthiness tests and an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating.

Like its predecessor, the all-new 2016 BMW X1 earns good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The BMW X1’s new body and structure design boosted its performance in the small overlap front crash test, earning a “good” rating. Overall, the new BMW X1 gained an additional 1.7 inches in height, 0.9 inches in width and decreased by 1.1 inches in length.

The BMW X1’s newly available front crash prevention system earns an advanced rating from IIHS. In the track tests at 12 mph, impact speed was reduced by an average of 10 mph. In the 25 mph test, impact speed was reduced by 7 mph. The system includes a forward collision warning component that meets National Highways Traffic Safety Administration criteria.

The 2016 BMW X1 also features a high-level of standard safety features including BMW Assist eCall, BMW TeleService, Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Dry Assist, Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control. Optional features such as Lane Departure Warning, Frontal Collision Warning including Pedestrian Warning and City Collision Mitigation are also available.

Good scores across all test categories. It shouldn't be a surprise since the X1 also passed Euro NCAP a few months ago with flaying colours.

Here's the small overlap IIHS crash test which is actually not available in Euro NCAP:

And the moderate overlap test:

I'm disappointed in the optional collision mitigation system performance:

"In the track tests at 12 mph, impact speed was reduced by an average of 10 mph. In the 25 mph test, impact speed was reduced by 7 mph."

This kind of performance is behind the times. The Toyota safety sense P system on the 2016 RAV4 and the Honda sensing system on the 2016 CRV can completely avoid both a 12 mph and 25 mph collision in IIHS testing. BMW has an optional system (when also combined with the optional adaptive cruise control) on the X5 and the 5 series that can perform as well. Why did they not carry lessons from the X5 and 5 to the X1? Toyota and Honda have figured out how to do it. People may contend that this is not a priority on an 'ultimate driving machine', but without it, you cannot achieve a IIHS TSP+ rating. Also the EuroNCAP crash testing looks for these systems in their ratings -- it's not just the US. These systems are the next safety step and BMW can do better.

It's heavier, more expensive and fuel consumption is poorer. Different customers have different priorities and needs.

Of course. sDrive isn't available in all markets. It's mostly to do with fuel prices. Their majority of their target market for the sDrive and smaller 18d/18s engines consists of businesses (cheaper to lease, run and insure, lower tax band, etc.). Private customers normally tend to spend a bit more for bigger engines and higher trims (unless they really really really want a BMW on a tight budget; happens, but not a lot!).

Totally agree with you on this. BMW has stripped down lot of bmw level features from infotainment to safety in X1. One example is no blind spot monitoring, HK is not the one you get in other bmw. They are planning you make huge money from it which they will untill Q3 and GLA next gen are ready. Then from peer pressure they might include some features to match them and keep sales going.

The cap stays locked, obviously. Otherwise, it'd be a catastrophic failure and the car won't pass the test. The flap is just cosmetic and there's no need to over-engineer it into a heavy, complicated and expensive part.

The system in the X1 is entirely camera-based, whereas I believe the X5 and 5 are radar- AND camera-based. Likely the reason for the poor performance. I would certainly feel short-changed if I had opted for that package. I do feel short-changed with the NAV system...it does not contain the same features as the 3 series, etc. despite carrying the same price tag (in the US).
