Drive 20 inch M35i Tires in the Snow?

For those of you with the 20 inch wheels, do you have a set of winter tires?

If not, did you swap the performance tires will all season tires and install chains as needed?

Thanks.

I was looking for winter tires, but didn't end up getting any. It's very difficult to find tires of the size for the X2 with OE 20" wheels. I was looking at 19". There are a few more choices.

I was hoping the 18 would clear the brakes.. But I'll know later when I put tires on since the wife's x1 has 18" wheels. If you have 20" wheels you can definitely put on 19". Why would you put snow tires on my friend asked... And my answer is that once you use them you'd understand. It's almost like being able to drive as if there was no snow. Much better security in the stopping and turning. If you have the means to I'd always recommend them.

Thanks for the info.. Since I have both the wife's car and mine side by side.. I just eyeballed it with my tape measure. So the inside diameter appears to be 17" on my 19" wheels and the 18" wheels on the wife's car looks to be 16". The calipers on the m35i look to be 15.5". Of course not all wheels are the same. It looks to be possible, but only a test fit would tell. Finding 18" winter tires is a lot easier and cheaper than a 19" wheel. But also could afford to have more "meat" on the tire because of the profile.

Sounds like getting new wheels and running the stocks in the winter might be in order.

I actually like the stock 19s better from a distance.

Yeah most likely next year.. these tires should hopefully have enough meat on them to go through this winter and then I can go shopping. Often around Boston area there are tons of people buying and selling, so sometimes you can find a really crazy deal on a set of tires. I imagine chances are really high for me to find some factory Audi wheels with brand new tires on them and could scoop them up for like $500 and be done with winters. I did also think that the 19's looked better than the 20's.

I can confirm that 18's do fit on the X2. I got a set of Enkei's with Blizzak tires on mine

BlueX2 We're more curious with the M-Brakes in the m35i which are larger than the stock brakes I'm assuming since you listed your car being a 2018 28i model it doesn't have them.

18's on the M35i DO NOT FIT. I tried it as I posted it above.

Can you elaborate? Which 18" style did you try?

Interesting. TireRack seems to think that 18" wheels will fit the M35i.
See link below for fitting new wheel+tire combo:

Commonly, some smaller diameter wheels will fit, the key is the offset of the overall wheel, and also its clearance behind the spokes. The wheels that show in the configurator certainly look like such shapes. Not all 18's are likely to fit.

Interestingly, my dealer told me that BMW OEM wheels style #556 (18”) would fit but the specs I found online indicate those wheels are only 7.5” wide. I have the OEM 20” wheels on my X2 M35i and they are 8” wide to accommodate the M brakes. I’m not sure the 18” 556’s the dealer is trying to sell me are wide enough to accommodate the M brakes.

I love the way my OEM 20”s with Pirelli summer performance tires look but it’s about to start getting cold here (the specs say the tires are not to be driven below 45 degrees) and I’m researching the best options for winter/all season. I’m 100% sure I’ll have to ditch the 20”s I have now soon and since there’s a question about it 18” wheels fitting at all I think the only option is a 19” with all season or winter only tires. BMW wheel style 715m 19” seems to fit with pirelli snow tires.

I hate the idea of switching out tires twice a year though, especially since I bought the wheel/tire insurance for my 20” OEMs and the fact that the ride is pretty harsh with them on to begin with.

Actually double check on that... when I used to have tire insurance it covers ANY tire and rim you put on and damage. The newest BMW offered tire insurance was pretty skimmed down, which definitely made it not worth it to me. I'm still pretty lucky and haven't ever had to make any claims on any tires I've owned. (even when buying from other tire stores often it's like $10 a tire I just buy it)

Thanks, I checked. They will cover any tire/wheel combo attached to the vehicle as long as the tires are run flat.

The width of the rim is not the critical dimension, it's the offset that gives clearance. There are some other dimensions that matter, but if the dealer tells you it will fit, it seems like zero risk - assuming they're selling them to you.

You actually want the narrower rims for snow tires. Wide tires will not bite into the snow as well. The narrower the better, in general. Just make sure the overall diameter of the tires you select for them is within a few % of the 20's you have.

Off topic but did your enkei wheels accept the factory center cap? Pics please.
