Factory battery vs other brand

Hey...my 2016 X1 is now out of warranty. Sometimes I take it to the dealership but I found a repair shop that specifically works on BMW and MiniCoopers.

My car needs a new battery. Of course the dealership will do it..even with a discount it is more than taking it to the repair shop. Both batteries have the 2 year 24 month warranty...the only catch is the dealership will use a BMW part (which is on back order). The repair shop says the batteries they use are just as good ( I think he said Bauch brand). We are talking about a $75 difference.

Has your experience using other parts been good for your car? Should I stick with the factory battery?

Following - my 2016 x1 should be due soon for a replacement. Looks fairly easy enough to do myself - but curious stick with oem or aftermarket?

will see what others chime in with.

I wonder if your repair shop meant 'Bosch', who are a leading German manufacturer of many types of electrical equipment, including car batteries.
Just as an indication, in the UK a Bosch 80Ah 12 volt (standard UK car voltage) AGM battery for my X1(1.5L 3 cylinder petrol) would cost around £240 (US equivalent approx $335). That includes UK sales tax (VAT) at 20% and the battery has a 3 year guarantee. Base price without taxes would be around $280 but that is, of course, subject to any base price variation between UK/USA and I haven't a clue as to the level of US/State taxes.

Personally, I think Interstate AGM batteries are the best. I have been running them in my 2007 MINI for the last 6 years. I finally replaced the 1st one just this month. I have one in my 1990 BMW E30 Touring and one in my 1976 Autobianchi.

I plan on going non-BMW branded battery once I need to replace mine. There are quality, sometimes superior, aftermarket parts options, but also many inferior ones. Just need to do your research and pick carefully.

There's also concern of coding, along with registration, for a battery that doesn't match the same spec as your current one. An independent shop may charge for additional coding changes if you choose a different type battery than your existing one (e.g., going from AGM to lead acid). This isn't related to whether you go OEM or aftermarket, just a side issue to think about.

I've replaced the battery on my X1 a couple of months ago. Did it myself, took about half an hour, as there's a few bits to remove to be able to get it in (and it's quite a tight fit), and then another 10 minutes with ISTA to register the replacement.

New battery was an Exide brand - which is the same as the BMW branded battery that came out of it! I paid £125 from an online supplier for it - BMW wanted £400 to supply & fit.

Last thing - don't replace these batteries with old lead acid ones - they can't support the charging rate that modern cars use (mainly due to the drain that stop/start causes). AGM batteries charge at a considerably higher rate - I think you'd have trouble using a flooded battery.

A good aftermaket AGM battery is the best option.

My car came from the factory with a Banner model , that hardly lasted 4 years.

A BOSCH or VARTA equivalent is the best option , not only because you pay less but they are superior also.

Ensure the battery is same specification as the old one and also note it will need to be registered in the car system (which many battery specialist are able to do) so make sure any price quoted includes this. Not registering the battery will throw fault codes and can cause issues.

you don't need to do any coding for a new battery.
I got an after market battery from advanced auto parts a year ago and put it myself.

For someone going from AGM to lead acid, it would be. My point was to be aware of the type of battery getting installed. Coding and registration are two different issues. I never said coding was required for all new batteries because it's not. Registration is part of the proper installation for any new BMW battery to ensure maximum life and avoiding error codes related to an unregistered battery.

Attached a helpful document about BMW batteries.

You should register it at the very least and code it if it's a different size or type.

Failing to register a new battery to the ecu or which ever module controls the charging will let the compute think it is still on the old battery and try charging it longer and at a higher voltage (older batteries need a high voltage to charge generally but not always). So failing to register will diminish the life of your battery.

If anything it's a cheap way to have peace of mind

My BMW dealer replaced the battery ~2 months ago with an East Penn.

I agree that the new battery should be registered after installation.

I didn't register it and never had any issues in 2 years so far, I think the ecu did a good job on adjusting the new battery.
I didn't know it was advised to code a new battery for a bmw. I've replaced the battery in my e63 twice too and never had to do any programming so I thought the x1 would be just as easy being that is a much simpler vehicle.

Yes, you can do both (register or coding). It's pretty straightforward and really easy to use.

It's under "Service Functions --> Voltage Supply --> Battery". Take a look at this video for reference:

If the replacement battery is not the same specification as the one that you are replacing, you need both paid versions of BimmerCode and BimmerLink

You code it in BimmerCode, (i.e. tell the car the spec of the battery)

and then register it as a new, (replacement), Battery in BimmerLink

- once you have coded it in BimmerCode when you open BimmerLink it will recognise the new Battery and it's specification and then there is an option to register the (new) battery.

Are you sure BimmerLink can't code a different battery as well? When you go to battery registration in BimmerLink, there's an option for a different capacity/type battery, e.g.:
