Post Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error

Hey

About two months ago I noticed my car started showing an error every time I got into the vehicle saying to "Secure vehicle against rolling" I have seen numerous different discussions online but none seemed to come to a solution or single cause of this error. Everything still shifts completely fine in the car, the parking brake engages, and the car shifts into park fine. The car just recently (about 3 months ago) went out of warranty so if possible I would want to avoid a $1000+ bill from the service center. Has anyone else seen this and found a way to fix it? Seems to be a common problem, its a shame they have not addressed it as a recall.

Common issue. $10 spring needs replacing in the shifter. But it's a pain in the ass to do, a long 8 hour process to get to the little spring.

https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1598332&page=2

There's a link to both step by step instructions and a YouTube walkthrough of the repair in that thread.

Yup, same issue here as well. I went to the dealer and they are charging me for $2065 for a gear selector replacement (the whole thing)....I ended up gave up and I think imma leave it as it is for now, since it doesn't really affect the drivability.

Hey! Just letting you know I brought it into the dealer to diagnose. They found the same thing and quoted me 3050 to fix it. I asked if they would submit a goodwill request to BMWNA to have it covered and they did. I just heard back this morning, car is all fixed and BMWNA covered all but $150. Definitely worth checking out this option if you haven’t already!

Problem Solved

Dealer told me that the Shifter Linkage needed replacing and also the Ground Cable was corroded. Quoted $2400 for shifter, $630 for cable, $600 to reset diagnostics error, plus taxes. Approx. $4,000!

I followed this video
from https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCur...UrUnhjsFvh_R9g

Purchased the spring online for $3.68 plus $6.00 shipping

Took me all of 3 hours to replace, problem solved.

Can you please tell where you purchased the e spring online? My car is still ok. But if I have to do I like to replace the spring with a new one.
Thanks in advance.

Both eBay and aliexpress sell the springs for under $10.

Please report this

If you are having an issue with the warning light saying Secure Vehicle from Rolling, it seems that many others, including myself, are. Please take a few moments to submit a complaint to NHTSA (https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#index) and the Center for Automotive Safety (https://www.autosafety.org/). This is something that should be corrected by BMW through a recall. - Thanks

Please explain to me what a goodwill request is. I am having so many issues with My BMW right now they make no sense including the secure vehicle from rolling issue and I don’t know what to do because they want an arm and a leg to repair it.

Sorry to hear that you are having many issues with your car bud.
A goodwill request is basically an email that you need to send to the headquarters.
You need to describe the problems you are having and state that these faults are design faults appearing on every X1 and should be fixed by a recall for free rather than you facing a massive bill for repair.
You need to go down hard on them but sound professional at the same time.
To be honest, the best outcome will be they will reduce your bill from the cost of labour or the part itself. Or give you discount on overall costs of the repair.
It all depends on the country.
From reading free of charge will be only if you have extended warranty.
There is somewhere on the web a blank copy of this email, where you can just fill in your details.

Best of luck bud and if you are in the UK, drop me a PM, I can certainly fix the rolling error. I have fixed a few by now.

2016 X1, 43k miles. Message: Transmission: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center.

Insane quote from independent repair shops and BMW. Grace of God found all the threads, including this one, and the video referenced above.

Followed him through the process. Can't tell you how excited I was to find a broken spring when I opened up the shifter. All said and done, took me about 3 hours start to finish and the error is cleared.

So grateful to live in a time where forums like this and youtubers like him are available. Thanks guys!

Got this issue at 40k on my X1. $2k-$3k for the fix is ridiculous.

I may just do the same and file a complaint to BMWNA and see what happens.
If they don't cover it Ill just leave it tbh.
I really don't care about pressing the okay button for the error whenever I start my car.

C'mon man! You did a lot of things on your X1 and you won't do this? Go for it! You can do it!
