Panoramic Sunroof Shade Blind

Hi,
I have a problem with my panoramic sunroof shade blind it came loose on one side after leaving the sunroof opened (one click slide) during a cold frosty night (no rain though).
Has anyone got an idea how to fix the blind back into the track?

I had the same issue with the passenger side sagging and the whole headliner was taken apart and took the dealer almost five days to get the parts ordered and (the whole assembly had to be) replaced under warranty...felt like a big job.

Hi - me too. Did you or anyone else manage to get this fixed ?

It’s as though there isn’t enough tension in the blind to pull it taut enough.

Same issue here, happened out of nowhere. Dealer wants to charge $2,500 for the repair, as it’s not covered by CPO warranty. I think it’s ridiculous. Opened a case with BMW customer relations to see if they can get it covered.

Seems to be a common problem.
People are leaving the shade open all the time!

I dont have this problem but i want to be precautious so is it better to have the shade pulled out or retracted in. We normally keep it pulled out at all times to keep the sun out.

+1

How is this happening? Are people tilting the window open with the shade closed or something?

Also curious how often people who have this issue use the shade. I leave mine closed at work and in my driveway, and open it almost every time I drive. So far no problems on my 2016 and it's been through blizzards and heat waves alike.

I reported my issue to the NHTSA. Recommend others do the same to force a recall on this: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

Failures caused by related electronic parts are covered

The "Shade Blind" itself is not covered, but the electronic / electrical components are... So if you can point to a failure among those components having caused the overall issue you may have the repair covered.

The "shade blind" is listed as one part, #54-10-7-391-798, but is actually a system of sub-parts that include a motor and relay, the shade itself, small plastic pieces that provide structure, and two metal strips that line either side of the blind that coil in and out and provide tension (prevent sagging).

The issue is that these metal strips are attached to the blind only via two very thin lines of adhesive (i.e. destined to fail with normal use). Arguably, opening/closing the shade blind in extreme temperatures (i.e. direct summer heat, unmitigated winter cold) could make failure of this adhesive more likely.

Any malfunction of the motor or blockage of the "track", or any issue causing uneven retraction, could also cause the adhesive to fail in part or completely (i.e. partial sagging or complete elimination of the shade function). Any failure of the related electrical components could also cause these issues and, in this case, the repairs should be covered.

It is also possible that the motor fails to extract/retract fully, causing a lack of front-to-back tension.

Unfortunately, the entire sunroof system has to be removed to replace the shade blind (or any of the constituent pieces that make up part # 54-10-7-391-798). Lots of labor hours and alternatively, an extremely tedious and ill-advised DIY job.

Reporting to NHTSA is certainly a good idea, as an untimely failure of the shade blind can leave it sagging/hanging and blocking the view of the driver while operating the vehicle.

Garage List
Mine failed in this way and it was probably opened 12 times in 3 years. Don't miss it at all in my x2.

found a affordable part.

we just had ours fail. heard a crackling noise turned around and it was all bundled up. this really sucks. We basically cut the shade blind out.

in a lot of ways, it's pointless to have the shade blind I found it didn't keep the cold or heat out.

I am in Vancouver, bc Canada. I found a part on ali express which is much much cheaper than BMW. I bet it's manufactured there like most things are and slapped on with extra $$ and a BMW logo.

does anyone know how to install this? i am willing to pay

We just pulled the crappy cloth on the shade blind and left it as is.
I really didn't make a difference in the summer or winter. The costs
To replace it is not worth the little to no protection is provided.
If you are concerned consider tinting the window is a cheaper alternative
