Broken Mirror in reverse?

I have an 08 e92, and when put in reverse the right (passenger) door mirror points towards the ground, however the driver's side mirror does not. My sister has a slightly older x3 and both of her mirrors point down when in reverse. So my question is are both mirrors supposed to point down like in my sisters x3?

I'm almost positive that only the right mirror is supposed to tilt.

Only one mirror points down to my knowledge. It can be either one, depending on what position the power mirror switch is in (left or right).

Partial credit. You're right that only one tilts, but the only one that can tilt is the passenger side, achieved by keeping the mirror switch on the DRIVER'S side -- gotta love German logic. On my previous car either side could tilt (but not both at once) and if you wanted the driver's side to tilt, you moved the switch to the driver's side, and the opposite for the passenger's side. Tilting the driver mirror helped a lot when parking along the left side of the street, e.g. on one-way streets.

Ah! It's been a while since I changed my switch position.

German logic at its finest ...

Family E53 X5 (06) also works the same way - pass tilts only when switch in driver position, nothing else.

Provided that the mirror moves in the neutral position (middle), I wonder if any modifications/ECU programming required to have both mirrors tilt if you install RHD passenger mirror as your LHD driver mirror.

So my sister's car is broken, but its a good sort of broken. I would think having both mirrors pointing down would be helpful if you cant find an end spot and have to back in between two cars.

That manual has been nothing but useless crap, most of the stuff is different in the manual than it is in my car because I have the Idrive and most directions given in it are for the regular e90's without it. Maybe I was given the wrong manual...

You could also download the manual from the BMWNA website.

This might not be true of all BMW models, but the 3 Series doesn't have a middle position.

you can always tilt your mirrors manually and save them into a seat memory to tilt back -- use your original memory
