Aftermarket parts from BMW dealer service?

Wanted to see if this was common place but when going to a dealer for an oil change do they typically use an after market filter?

My car's maintenance program just ended so i figured i'd do the oil change myself that's when i discovered the after market filter. I would have assumed going to BMW dealer would be BMW parts given the price tag.

what brand did you receive? Any BMW dealer would be using BMW only parts.

for the oil filter MANN = OEM

What he said. Also, did you talk to the manager about it?

It may have to do with contracts. At the dealership I used to work for if you bought a prepaid maintenance plan your oil changes came with Penzoil and if you paid it was Mobil 1.

I'm betting that wasn't a BMW dealership.

Unless the filter possibly changed over the years, and honestly i'm not 100% familiar with the oil filter and brand and etc.

Reason i'm saying it was after market was because when i did my own oil change the filter i purchased was from the BMW dealer and it was visibly different than the filter that was already in the vehicle. Also required a different key to open the filter plug when letting the oil drain from the filter.

I didn't bring it up to dealer because I didn't notice this issue until the next oil change was due. Wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing something similar. There's the change that the filter i purchased from the dealer was the aftermarket one, i just know they were clearly not the same.

It's not uncommon for you to receive a BMW filter from a Mann-filter batch without a BMW logo stamped on it.
