Battery size for X1 F48: 70Ah EFB vs 80Ah AGM

Hi all, I’m planning to replace the battery on my X1 F48 by myself so I went ahead to check several manufacturers (Varta, Bosch, Exide etc.) and they all pretty much recommend the same battery type: 80Ah AGM.

Just to be sure before I actually go buy one, I decided to confirm that I currently have the same battery type installed. To my surprise, the car actually comes with 70Ah EFB!

My question is, will the 80Ah battery fit the battery compartment? From what I gather the 80Ah battery is longer by 3.5cm/1.5”. I’m just worried it won’t fit as it looks pretty tight space under the bonnet.

P.S. I have BimmerCode/BimmerLink so registering and coding the new battery isn’t an issue.

I too replaced the battery myself just last year. I went with the exact same capacity that was in the car already, which in my case was the 80Ah. I just didn't want to try and fit a different size even though these cars clearly can have either capacity.

Do you remember if there was some space there should I go with slightly bigger dimension?

They will all fit. If it’s me, I will go with 80Ah to have more juice.

I really hope so! But yeah I want to go with 80Ah as the price difference isn’t significant especially with AGM where I believe it would last 5+ years

I would go for the biggest battery that will fit. We know for sure that 80ah will fit as it fitted with many X1’en out.

Moving from EFB to AGM and size you also need to change the coding, not only registering.

That’s my plan. Tbh, I will be really surprised if the 80Ah doesn’t physically fit the space.

When I researched to replace mine, I was saw the options of an H6 or an H7 battery. I chose the H6 at first and it was too small, the retainer wouldn't hold it in place. returned the H6 for the last H7 EFB and it fits perfectly-70Ah, 700 CCA just like the original.
Just my $.02

Is yours F48 too? Do you recall if there is enough space to go with the 80Ah instead?

Mine is F48 18d Xdrive and is fitted with a 80ah AGM battery, if that’s what you want to know.
