Car not starting 2016 bmw x1

I looked for answers here but everything that comes up is for 3 series mostly so not quite sure if it applies.

My vehicle was working fine yesterday, went out and parked when I got back it didn't start right away-- not even crank-- tried it for a second time and it did so I didn't think much of it.
This morning the car didn't start at all, all lights and equipment works and get the ignition/start malfunction message. All I hear is one click but engine but turn over.
Tried to jump start got nothing, pulled the battery to have it tested and it is in good health.
There are not major codes using bimmer link other than the one in the picture below. [IMG][/IMG]

Does that mean my alternator is bad?

My apologies, I meant starter.
That would seem to be the logical assumption but I don't want to go drop $400 when it could be a relay somewhere.
I was trying to find info on the starter relay location but I haven't had any luck. I know where the fuses are but starter relay is not mentioned in the small attached guide.

I think AutoZone can test the starter. Unfortunately you have to pull it and take it there. In my experience with starter relays the car won't do anything when the relay dies.

Turns out it was the starter. The clicking and everything else working should've been a give away but I wanted to make sure before I crawled under the car to remove it.

Removal is fairly easy actually for those looking to do a DIY repair. All you need to do is remove the under tray and starter will become immediately visible right next to the transmission. It is held together by 3 torx bolts and all you need is a medium sized extension to reach one of them.
I had mine rebuilt locally for $175 and had it ready in one day. Beats paying ~$400 for a new one.

I just completed the same install on a 2019 X1. In my reasearch the 2020+ (full LCI) might be different (cars with the electronic shifter)

Code: 216119
Pinion starter: Line disconnection, starter motor control (KL50 / KL30)

I first made sure all the connections to the starter were clean, and for good measure I also replaced the battery (5 years old) as to not get stuck anywhere. There were no battery discharge warnings or codes and live data showed good voltage.

This video was the closest thing I could find for a DIY. It’s a F series Mini with the 1.5L, a different engine and starter but the same location and install process. Took me about an hour total.

I sourced a new 12-41-7-645-979 from a dealership parts site, prices vary from $300 to $750 for the Denso unit. I reused the starter bolts because I couldn’t find them in stock for fast shipment or pickup. A short ratchet ensured I didn’t get too much torque on the aluminum bolts.
