Remember Nelly's first big hit, Hot Sh$t? He says "Keys to my Beemer man" in that song--I wouldn't be surprised if that's where a lot of people picked the "wrong" nomenclature up.

The term "Beemer" started as a slang term for the acronym "BMW," adapted from the early-20th century British pronunciation of BSA (as /ˈbisə/ or /ˈbizə/), whose motorcycles were often racing BMWs. Over time, the term became closely associated with BMW motorcycles.
In the United States, the term "Bimmer" was later coined to refer (exclusively) to BMW automobiles. As such, use of the word "Beemer" to refer to a BMW automobile is frowned upon by some BMW enthusiasts, because it is the term used for motorcycles. Although the distinction is arbitrary, the media, movies, and people still use the term "Beemer" to refer to the automobiles. The initials BMW are pronounced [beː ɛm ˈveː] in German. The model series are referred to as "Einser" ("One-er" for 1 series), "Dreier" ("Three-er" for 3 series), "Fünfer" ("Five-er" for the 5 series), "Sechser" ("Six-er" for the 6 series), "Siebener" ("Seven-er" for the 7 series). http://www.wienertakesall.com/ |

i bought one of those "boosted bimmer... my anti drug" shirts and i often have to explain to people the story of bimmer vs beemer. basically hollywood started saying it "bee-mer" and everybody says it that way now, but ye beemer is a motorcycle and bimmer the car. i just tell people to call it what they want, and i'll call it what i want...... a fine ass automobile.

As decided upon at the German Vehicle Nickname Assignment Convention of 2001, and further ruled upon and sanctioned by dmboone25.
Its official. I personally think it IS "BEA-mer", but what do I know? I'm only the guy making the payments. I think if you own the car you can call it whatever you like, and if you don't own one you aren't on this board so you'll have missed the "announcement". |

I tend to care in the same fashion that one might care if someone were to mispronounce "toyota", I have heard some thick accented people pronounce it as "Tie-ya-tah". It bothers me in the same way when people call a bimmer a "beemer" or "beamer". I know what they are talking about but it is annoying as can be...

While we are correcting fallacies, I will bring up the BMW roundel, which is was NOT designed to look like a propeller, despite the public's belief as so...
____________________________ It was on 5 October 1917 that the BMW trademark was registered with the Imperial Trade Mark Roll under No. 221388. It featured the circular design of the Rapp logo but with the letters BMW at the top of the outer ring. The inner featured quadrants in the Bavarian Free State colors of blue and white - but in the opposed order - as it was illegal to use national symbols in a commercial trademark. The design was not in any way connected with aircraft engines or propellers. The idea that the blue and white had anything to do with spinning propellers comes from a 1929 advertisement, which featured aircraft with the image of the Roundel in the rotating propellers. This advertisement came at the beginning of the Great Depression, which coincided with BMW acquiring the license to build Pratt & Whitney radial aircraft engines. The advertising department used the roundel and BMW heritage in an attempt to increase sales of the new radial motors. http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/ne...del/index.html http://www.vintagebmw.org/version6/?q=node/140 |
