This means tomorrow we have to start from the pitlane !

The whole situation is not confirmed by Mercedes yet...

Literally no risk, high/all reward. Do what you can, take whatever penalty. You're starting at the back of the grid anyway and use this race as another test session and hope RUS can salvage some points for Mercedes.

Staying out of harms way more like in case there's a pile up, self preservation.

Damn, I only added an extra half hour to the recording so I didn’t see Q3 with the time they took to clear Mick’s car. Glad to hear he was conscious the entire time and the hospital visit was just precautionary. My stupid ass should have known better and added at least an hour knowing which track it was and multiple red flags were likely.

Very surprised to see Lewis and all the bottom feeders were all Mercedes engines but mainly how far back Lewis was in particular, just speechless. Their WCC and WDC title hopes looks gone and the season’s just started.

From practice 3 I thought for sure Max had several tenths on both my horses so I’m pretty surprised he’s behind both. Awesome maiden pole for Checo, that lap absolutely came out of nowhere with him being far behind the other three the entire weekend.

Hoping against hope that we don’t get too many retirements tomorrow and everyone gets away from this dangerous track unscathed. They need to take this off the calendar, we can’t have a street circuit this fast and blind corners.

It's only a matter of time before this stupid track murders somebody. They had carte blanche to make whatever track they wanted and they come up with this mine field. It's unreal.

I know it's the Sun, but if it's true, that's really sick.
Why would a marshal do that? It goes against everything a marshal should put his efford into.

edit: it's pretty much on all sportsnewssites now, so it's probably true...

These corners are so sketchy, like man... Even with the new walls being pushed back it is still immensely sketchy. You saw mick hit the curb and instantly lose control, probably because the curb lifted the car enough that the venturi tunnels weren't able to genereate the downforce anymore. Then he spun off.

OK, let's not be naïve, it is definitely ambiguous:
  • either Merc-AMG is confirming to be very satisfied with P3 and P4 for HAM and RUS, given the difficult circumstances;
  • and/or Schadenfreude of Merc-AMG because of the DNF by VER and PER; IMHO that's always a bad idea, because that narrative may backfire later this season.
Anyways, undoubtedly the Red Bull team will read Schadenfreude in it, and will consider it a bill to be settled.
Toto Wolff's expression a couple of seconds after HAM not making it to Q2 today needs no words:

Name: F1_2022_Jeddah_Wolff.png

The 2022 F1 season has barely started, so it's way too early to draw conclusions - still a lot is bound to happen, cars will get updates, etc. But a trend can already be spotted.

The Merc powered cars struggle to be truly competitive. Only RUS, oozing with massive talent, manages to squeeze the most out of the Merc-AMG package (just like he did with Williams F1 cars). RUS is 24 and HAM is 37. Despite his vast experience, numerous titles and records, HAM keeps failing to set up his car in a way to achieve similar performance as RUS this season. They drive the same package though. During Bahrain qualifications RUS gave HAM a DRS/slipstream tow to allow HAM scoring a proper position on the start grid. And during the Bahrain race, RUS was covering HAM's back all the time, fencing off others behind.

To me it looks like 2021 is still lingering on inside HAM's mind. P6 for RUS and P16 for HAM today. No P16 because of car issues (compared to RUS), a penalty or a Q1 cut short; no, HAM got P16 simply because 15 other drivers clocked a faster lap.

Only if Merc-AMG gives HAM a (more) competitive car and keeps ordering RUS to be HAM's wingman, HAM will be capable to win races. But it will be to no avail: many times in 2022 the younger generation such as LEC, SAI and VER (currently driving better packages and not dealing with 2021 splinters inside their minds), as well as RUS, will outperform HAM.

If Merc-AMG wants to preserve its 2022 WDC chances, Wolff & C° should focus on RUS, with HAM in the role of wingman. With all his skills and experience, HAM could be some sort of Yoda for RUS.

This has nothing to do with 'dislike' or so-called 'hate'. Regardless of all respect and esteem I got for HAM, HAM not making it to Q2 for the first time since Brazil 2017 today, is IMHO an omen for the rest of his 2022 F1 season.

IDK I think Hamilton is used to having the setup being easily done to his liking so he can extract the most out of the car, but the w13 is so difficult to manage and setup he can't get it done in the 3 practice sessions. Epescially if you have to try and dial out porposing before even before setting up balance, so you really don't have much time to get the car where you like it.

Whereas I think with George he is used to driving absolute piles of crap, that nothing bothers him. He just learned to deal with it.

But George really is talented, remember we all talked some smack about how a top driver cant get wins or points in a Williams. Well George is the one driver who we know for certain, defies this logic. Last year he got alot of points, and nearly out qualified max in spa, and got 2nd place for his amazing availability to out drive the car.

Literally I keep hearing about people saying a driver out driving their car but it's hard to see, because said driver is in a capable car at the front of the field. But with George he really took a car that was visibly a pile of trash (Williams of 2021) and put it in places where the car shouldn't have been (Q3, points and 1 p2 podium finish - albeit a questionable race)

All those F1 guys have tinkered countless times with set-ups since they were kids racing karts.

HAM (37) is 13 years older than RUS (24), so has way more experience in F1. He needs no introduction: he entered F1 in 2007. The rest is history. 2022 is his 16th season in F1. Undoubtedly a 'seasoned' F1 driver.

RUS entered F1 in 2019. 2022 is his 4th season in F1. He scored no points in 2019, 3 points in 2020 (famous Sakhir race where he replaced HAM and was close to victory) and 16 points in 2021. Repeatedly showed amazing pace in qualifying in the past. Since 2022 he can finally show his massive talent. Already 12 points in 2022 from the get-go. Potential future F1 world champion, alike LEC and Oscar Piastri (if they give him a proper F1 seat).

Earlier today, with the same package, the substantially less experienced RUS outqualified the very experienced HAM (by many considered to be GOAT F1 driver).

Well experience means nothing setting up a ground effects car, the philosophy of these cars are so much different and the new tires are so different all previous experience goes out the window. The next issue is porpoising and that was extremely hard to dial out on the w13, and after that's dialed out you have to fix the balancing so setup is extremely hard on the w13. Especially with the lack of data on these new cars.

Package may be the same but George and Lewis differed on setup.

Valid point.

But wouldn't it be quite striking that the new kid in Merc-AMG town shows the living F1 legend the way on how to properly set up a Merc-AMG to make it through Q1 and Q2 ? The W13 is new for both, they are backed by highly qualified staff and lots of ressources ("More than 950 employees work 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Brackley site.") and they get equal opportunities to fine-tune settings to match their personal preferences (each driver has its own style).
