We got the first cat and took him in for shots, etc. The vet practice was only for cats, and the vet shared two useful pieces of info with us: 1) if the cat swallows a piece of string and doesn't pass it, it will cost you $1,800 for me to operate and remove it ; and, 2) a cat is not a dog or like a dog. doh, right? the vet sees our failure to get it and says "They're wild animals, and you'll be better owners if you remember it." and she was right!

The other five came along much later when we lived in the country, and they were mostly let-in to eat. They had to be kept separated when being fed or the wildest one would have found a way to eat all five cats' food. We'd let them in for an hour or two in the evening, but they spent the night, and in the winter, the days, too, in a kennel. From there, they could get to the outdoors and also into a breezeway (glassed-in in the winter and screened in the summer) where they could hang, bring their kills in, and play on their cat condos and with their toys. All six of those cats were certainly the definition of independent. Only one had that "special girl friend" thing going on. While she was small, she was more wild and aggressive than the other five put together. Due to ranging too far from home while hunting at night, that got her killed at age 3. Oddly, maybe, she wasn't just the most aggressive, she was also by far the sweetest and most friendly. That was one heckuva cat, and we were very saddened when we lost her. Given how many predators were roaming about at night there, it's a miracle we didn't lose more of them.

Here is one of our 3 pets. Two white cats and this guy. Needless to say I vacuum every other day or it looks like we are all wearing white socks.

Our sort-of solution was to have our oak floors refinished to match our orange tabby's fur color. Once the first "fur bunnies" appear, we know it's time to vacuum again - roughly, 5-7 days.

Oh yeah, real hard. That sleeping up to 16 hours a day can certainly wear a kitty-cat out.
