Strange Drivetrain Noises Mainly in Cold Temps?
Last month or so my 2016 X1 is making some weird noises, mostly or worse when under 50-deg out. Sounds slightly "rotational" to me, not really related to engine RPM. First I thought it was a wheel bearing, but those seem tight and noise grinding by hand rotation. No codes/lights being thrown I can tell in Carly related. Some of the various symptoms.
1 - as mentioned this seems mainly happening at cold temps under 50-deg. Seems to be worse the colder it is. Once vehicle warms up well, the noise seems to go away or minimize a lot. 2 - The noise is hard to describe, but like I said kind of wheel speed related, not engine RPM. Kind of like a growl or bearing rubbing, etc. From cabin I "think" it's coming from up front, more towards the front right area. 3 - Noise seems to oscillate up down in severity based on either engine load or suspension acting or turning. 4 - Once I was straight/level with cruise control little/no noise, then climbing a hill with cruise trying to maintain speed, the noise definitely rose with the extra engine/drive load. 5- Noise seems slightly rise/fall with ripples in the road, etc., but more heavy/shock loads like pothole or speedbump don't seem to affect it. 6 - Turning at low speed seems to make the noise worse, I think more so when turning left I think, but I think both ways can do it. 7 - Unsure if related, but upon initial start for a few seconds, then engine/exhaust seem pretty loud, like a deep throaty roar or truck, but goes away quickly. Exhaust/engine mounts seem fine. 8 - Also unsure related, but shifting the trans into reverse seems to make the trans a LOT louder than I recall before. All other gears are fine, shifts fine, etc. 9 - Under the car all suspension elements seem fine at least by hand from under the car(don't have a lift!), nothing loose, half-shaft no play, ball joints tight, etc. Trying to get a handle on what this might be before I take it in to a mechanic. Bearing, ball joint, half shaft, transmission, gearbox, etc. I've tried to get a phone video of the noise while driving, but phone is not picking it up well. |

Could it be related to shock absorbers? https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2057261

I have the same exact problem, how did you resolve it?
The problem you described is what I get exactly now.
Also for 2016 BMW X1. Model xdrive 28i Your post is 2 years old, I guess you must have resolved already. Can you share what the problem was. and how was it resolved? |

Hi Rustynuts and cx1,
I have the exact situation - Rustynuts couldn't have described it better! I'm interested to find out whether you guys worked out what the problem was? I drive a 2016 F48 with a B48 engine. I'm seeing a few posts on the forum that suggests it might be an engine mount problem. Not sure if this might be it. (https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1858812) Many thanks! |
