Hi bro, My car is the same as yours as there are three sensors at the back vent that need to be disconnected. However two of them can hardly be removed. Can you give me a hint on how to disconnect them? And also, do we need to remove the vent tube as well? The guide doesn't mention so I didn't do. But it covers the selection gear so the gear cannot be lift up. Thanks with regards |

Use a small flat screwdriver to disconnect those two connectors. The big one is easy to disconnect if you rotate the top stopper.
And yes, the plastic vents need to be removed. Quote:

Another vehicle with same issue
Just in case anyone ever files a lawsuit for this, my 2016 BMW X1 has the exact same problem. BMW Customer Relations refused to offer any assistance. The vehicle has only 53,000 miles on it. The local dealership in Texas wants to charge $2,267.19 for a replacement. I even have an extended warranty, but of course, it doesn't cover this part. Last 7 of VIN: 5F65762.

Since I had the problem for some time, I decided today and I unpacked and fixed it.
I used the guide (thanks to the one who made it). It lasted quite a long time (6-7 hours). I kept looking for a spring but unfortunately I didn't find it. I did not have very precise information of dimensions etc , and even thought I searched the on internet for some days in a row, I didn't find anything. The solution was to open the spring one more turn because it was broken and one arm was very short. In the end the error disappeared, hopefully it will not appear and the spring will resist. I took pictures with more information about the size of the spring and i will attach some pictures. |

Did anybody measure the spring by any chance ?
Trying to gather myself to try this fix - there seem to be plenty of torsion springs on ebay - just need the wire thickness and hole diameter |

This broken spring affected my wife's X1. Can't believe that BMW hasn't recalled this part yet, a $0.05 spring failing and creating a potential repair of over $1500
Anyway, I bought a spring from a seller in China, and did the repair myself. replacement springs on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Torsion-Spr...53.m1438.l2649 Wife's X1 is a MY '17 with 48k km on it.

That's the same solution as what's discussed in the thread. Looks like he used the same guide.

Hello,
I am new to the forum and I own an X1 F48 2018 2.0xdrive 80000 km, for some time it has been starting to shock in the gearbox at stage 2 to 3 or when I turn my back it has a sudden moment. When the gear changes to 3, it still has moments when it turns empty. What can I do for them? Thank you! I hope I posted where I should. Last edited by GeoMake; 07-19-2021 at 07:01 AM.. |

Great guide and YouTube video. I'm about attempt the fix, but before I do so, is there any point in me first taking it into a dealer for a diagnosis? I.e. could anything else be the cause of the error messages?

Thanks for all the guide and disscuss.
Could anyone share their experience to fix this issue via dealer or local shop? What part/s was replaced and how much is the cost? Is there a "Goodwill" plan in the US? Thank you all in advance. |

It would be really useful if someone who's made the fix could post the spring part number (if it has one) or give the dimensions, so that I can try to source a replacement spring. The post above does try to show the spring measurements, but this is not entirely clear and is for the modified spring rather than the original one.
So far (without the dimensions) I seem to be able to buy from USA on EBAY (outrageously priced at £25), or from Alibaba, at a reasonable price but with 75 day delivery. |
