"M" Button?
So this maybe a stupid question, but what does pressing the M button these cars actually does? I have heard/read that it opens up a flap in the exhaust and makes it louder, but is there anything else that's done to the engine after pressing the M button?
Recently a local X5M went up for sale and in the description the guy wrote something like, 'go from 350hp to 550hp with the press of a button'. Of course he was referring to the M button but I didn't think it impacted the engine in a way like this? So I got curious...what does hitting M mean exactly? In my E92 M3 it made the revs go up etc but put the X5M in sport mode does that without even turning M Power. |

It changes the shift point and opens the exhaust flap. The settings can be changed to switch to "power" mode which increases perceived throttle response, it can set the traction control to M Dynamic Mode, and it can set the suspension to the sporty, stiff setting if you program it that way. As far as I know, no increase in power or anything.

It does increase boost by a few (2-3?) PSI hence the "Power" mode.
When setting it to Power mode and M Dynamic for suspension you can feel the truck dynamics change when pressing the M button |
