CarPlay retrofit with non-nav display

Hi -

I’ve been searching around but can’t seem to locate a clear answer. I have a 2018 X1 without navigation and with the small non-touch display.

Is there a way to retrofit this screen to be compatible with apple carplay? And if not is there an aftermarket screen that retains the existing functionality?

Thanks in advance.

Go to this thread (The F48 & Apple CarPlay - MJE60 guide) on the forum and ask the question, link below, you will need to provide your car VIN number and they will check if your head unit is compatible (basically the head unit (HU) needs to have wlan/wifi). If your head unit is compatible there are members of the forum who can help you purchase the software licence (fsc code) from BMW and then remotely enable Carplay. If your HU is not compatible then the only option is to piggyback a separate android box which coexists with existing hardware but enables android for auto including Apple CarPlay, one advantage can be a big new display. There are threads on this topic also, many options are available! Either way it will cost you approx $400 plus .

If you had done some basic searches on this forum you would have easily found the info. You may also need to contribute to the forum by participating in a few discussion in order to enable messaging which is used by those who help fellow forum members to set up arrangements. Unfortunately too many people join the forum, don’t bother to even read any posts or participate in discussions but expect help, if they get it they then leave. Anyhow, hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

Thanks. I already know that the existing HU will not support CarPlay. I was mostly wondering if replacing the screen was a good option or not. I’ll go to that thread also but I found this as well. https://www.amazon.com/Road-Top-Wire...240765174&th=1

Your car will have an Entrynav 2 HU , not NBT evo so I doubt the listing is suitable but many vendors do not know themselves and incorrectly describe. There are many android boxes for your car out there , many come with new larger displays (hardware built into new display) and gps antennae, just search this forum. Bimmertech do a full support option but loads of boxes direct from China also and usually cheaper. The main confusion is that many Chinese sellers refer to NBT and NBT evo but they actually mean Entrynav and Entrynav 2 but not always. so I recommend using a local seller who will confirm compatibility.

Hi
Just a point, do NOT rely on your dealer to know if your HU is compatible with Carplay, most haven’t got a clue. Give your VIN in thread I provided and ask if it is compatible.

As you don't have a navi it's safe to say the original route would be way too costly.
You would probably have to buy a new head unit which has the WiFi antenna for Carplay and a new screen.

Your safest bet would be to get one of these:
Xonrich F48 Android 10 inch display

You will need to code the resolution of the display to adapt to the new screen anyway.

This is what the non-touch screen looks like, which according to everything I’ve read in the other thread fits this:

fit an aftermarket android box (essentially plugs into the HU aux input) with 10.25” screen and loads of apps including CarPlay. Please note however that there is a consensus developing that as at 04/2019, these units are really only compatible with first generation (non touch screen) F48 Head Units

There is no need for aftermarket box etc.
CarPlay could be activated as from factory (even on non-nav car)
