i cant really understand it, but am worried about the 335d going in for service this week and coming out with the silver i-drive screen and lost ponies

NOT WHAT I WANT really

do you think BMW would use different ECU flashes ona service without telling you and with this ecu you may lose BHP??

and a worthwhile question would be..?! would a re-map still give significant gains after this new ECU flash

Shall i ask them not to upgrade anything when she goes in?

In a word ... No.

BMW state the vehicles performance data on their website and in their brochures. If they 'de-map' it and reduce that performance you would have a legitimate cause for complaint.

If you have a 3rd party remap and BMW flash your ECU you will probably loose the remap data. DMS over to replace this for free as many times as you require.

I presume that as he's talking about e60 5 series it'll be different ECU/Programming anyway.

I also don't reckon they'd update it for you just because its in for a service unless you've reported a fault or something?

Bmw don't update the ECU unless you report a fault pertaining to it.

well the m5 boys have found BMW have flashed there software without telling them without any issues!!

but without my roading the car before and after i will not really know if she is down on power, only wa will be if the car feels slower?

I seriously doubt they will update just for the hell of it, it just takes too long and is too risky. If you have a demonstrable problem that's fixed by the update then I'm sure they would.

Just book a while you wait service and I doubt they'll have the time to do it.

Here's a simple solution to your dilemma Carlos - ask them if they are going to flash the ecu - if you don't want it - tell them.

Carlos I wouldn't worry - the dealer with only flash the I-Drive part of the ECU, and not the engine managment area. Firstly, it will take them too long to flash the whole ECU just to do it on a whim (almost a day's labour), and secondly there would be no reason for them to mess about with the engine management system if there isn't a fault or if there aren't any updates available.

You should ask them to see if there are any updates or PUMA cases with regards to the engine ECU on your car. I had my engine ECU updated a couple of months back to cure slightly rough running/coughing, and now the engine's smoother and torquier. Not all ECU upgrades are bad! Besides, are those M5 boys REALLY sure they've lost power, or are they scaremongering?!

A PUMA update is a technical update released by BMW which is recommended to be installed on certain cars.

Well you can't ever account for certain technicians who don't care, but then again this is a BMW dealer and even if they may demonstrate less care than what you would expect, they will still be professional enough to do the job properly. After all, they still get paid for checking warranty work and things, so it's no skin of their nose as it were. Just tell them all the problems, and ask them for a written report on what was wrong, and what the fix was. If they are like Sytner's (although not the best dealer in the world, ahem..) the very least they will do is have a written report of everything they've done to the car, including where it's been, what's been taken off, what's been put back on etc etc... One thing I have to say about my dealer is that they are very diligent when it comes to covering their asses..!!

Did Mrs Fandango tell you that your dipstick was faulty ?

Seriously - how on earth can you have a faulty dipstick ??????

It's a bit of metal that you stick in a tube .. what could go wrong ??????

Does your dipstick change length ? Do the max/min markings re-align themselves while you sleep ??????

If there is a 'faulty dipstick' at play here I don't think it's the one under the bonnet. I think it's the one driving your car.
