FFS, possible petrol leak

Title says it all, last couple of days, strong smell of petrol fumes after I park up, regardless of tank level. Been through a tank already this week.

Any idea how I can track it down? Not like dirty derv that leaves a stain

Take a look under the OSR behind the exhaust end box.
I noticed a green seal where the filler pipe enters the tank.
Looked vulnerable to me...

...sniff....

Can you see where the fuel rail return hose feeds into it?
May be simple hose split or clip off.
Run it dry and drop it.

Anyone know where the lift pump plugs into this?

I'm sure I read on here a while back, the fuel smell is common on the E9* range, but i can't remember what causes it, I have noticed mine smells of fuel more when the weather is warmer.......
Maybe a techy will be along to answer soon?
Any updates?

A lot of fuel that is pumped to the engine injectors is not used and gets returned to the tank, warm.
And in hot weather the petrol will heat in the tank causing more vapour.
It's got to vent off somewhere or the fuel tank will split, most are ployurethane or similar plastic

Its a crack in the neck of the pipe between the filler cap and the tank, just above the tank. I'll be fine so long as I dont have more than 3/4 of a tank of petrol in. Parts ordered, booked in again next week. JUst have to put up with a range of 200 miles

3/4 tank = 200 miles... Eeek!

..and I was moaning about 39.7 mpg

Glad you'll be getting it sorted though!

I've been critical of BMW in the past when things have gone wrong and they haven't handled things well (and rightly so) but this repair has been done with minimum inconvenience and top customer care. Especially as this was a borderline warranty issue in that the pipe wasn't strictly a warranty item. So thanks due to Scothall in Leeds.

I doubt BMW would want the bad press of a car blowing up & killing a family because of a crack in a petrol pipe that's not been damaged (tucked up behind the wheel arch) and cracked of its own accord.

I dont see that things in a petrol tank should need repairing/maintaing for at least 10 years. Shit happens but there are too many things going wrong with BM's today
