Interesting. Googling turns up many posts re tinting sunroofs and what you were told, but none saying their sunroof cracked because of it. Some suggested it was an urban myth from wayback when sunroofs on a particular model vehicle cracked due to poor design, and the manufacturer tried to blame the tinting.

The suggestions seem to be 5% mirror tint and leave the shade open on hot days when the vehicle is parked to avoid the temperature differential issue (if that is a problem in reality).

I'd be interested in how well the sunroof + shade reduce or eliminate the UV.

While some may say if you don't want a sunroof don't buy a vehicle with it, but of course the high end models often you don't have a choice.
