I do the same as ttimbo although it's nowhere near as smooth as auto hold and you have to have your foot firmly on the brake or it triggers the stop start when you release your foot from the brake

That's the aspect of auto-hold we really appreciate - the way it interacts with the engine stop/start system. With auto-hold engaged you can take your foot off the brake and the engine remains stopped. Much more relaxed city and town driving. After 5 years of it in our F25 X3 we are very reluctant to go without in our next car.
