When you select DTC it will allow you to have more wheelspin before cutting power / before braking, and it allows bigger angles. So indeed, you can go quite sideways with it. The stability control however is still active and will catch you if you are over doing it
This function is great for driving away in snow and for more sporty driving / tracking. The M3 has similar features by the way.
