Mid-engine Maserati MC20

The new MC20 mid-engined sports car marks Maserati's return to racing

The car will bow in May 2020 and herald the beginning of a "new Maserati Era"

Maserati’s upcoming mid-engined sports car will be called the MC20, and will mark the brand’s return to racing, it said late February.

The Maserati Corse 20 – that’s Italian for “Maserati Racing” – will be unveiled in Modena at the end of May, according to a press release this week.

“Spy shots” released in November by the company itself hint at a test mule based around an Alfa Romeo 4C, though that could just be our eyes.

Not just another model, the automaker is calling the MC20 “the first car born in the new Era of the Modena firm.” It noted, too, that it would be powered by an “advanced electric powertrain” not shared with sibling Ferrari, suggesting though it’s a throwback, this car will be very new-school.

An electric version is a certainty, but it’s known Maserati is also developing mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains, which may or may not also find themselves in the chassis of the two-seater. Rumours of a turbocharged V8 getting stuck back there, too, are swirling.

The car will be a spiritual successor to the MC12, which also brought Maserati back into the world of racing in 2004, taking numerous titles across various FIA series before being retired in 2010.

Maserati traces its racing history back to 1926, when it turned out the Tipo 26, named for its year of construction. The MC20 follows a similar naming scheme.

Its May release puts it just ahead of the debut of a new SUV the company has planned. After the SUV, we’ll also see a new EV-powertrain sports coupe, the Alfieri, meant to take the place of the old Granturismo.
