I was doing some work underneath the car a while back and noticed that the area you want to be kicking to open the rear hatch is between the license plate would be (north american plates). The area where it always went off was appx 4-6 inches in from the last part of the plastic bumper and appx 2-3 inches below the muffler.
My wife and I use it exclusively and rarely ever have the need to hit the push to close/open buttons. I know that they usually mount the sensors in the bumper so next time you wash your car try giving the dark trim area a wipe to see if that helps get consistency for using the hands free tail gate option
