True - but if anything the genuine M Division cars were even more hardcore at that point as the only cars produced up until then were the M1 and the e12 M535i (that had the M88 engine from the M1).
So the equivalent of a tarted up 320i with a stripe kit is pretty much what we're seeing here with the X2.
