To be fair, BMW has always done these M-appearance packages towards the end of a model run. Same as my sport + edition e92 (thankfully with no M badges or stripes, but a few features that were previously "M3 exclusive" like blue stitching on the black leather interior) to try to move the last e92s when buyers knew full well that the F32 was imminent.
Began with the e12 & e21 appearance packages that included wheels and trunk spoiler / Recaro seats, M stripes + badges but no extra HP.
eg. e21 Motorsport edition - could be had on the 320i or 323i.
I actually think the mesh looks better on the X2 grille than on the M340i
