Almost definitely the wrong sensor. The M35i has much more boost and therefore will gulp much more air. I'd be shocked if BMW used a sensor with the same operating range on both the 28i and M35i.

The plumbing on these BMS filter bases seems kind of close to the neck, to me. Usually the MAF is recessed a little ways down the intake pipe/airbox assembly, and has a diffuser screen in front of it to smooth the flow. Such design leads to more accurate metering. The BMS filter seems to just stick the MAF out in the direct opening of the filter. What's down there between the filter output and the MAF?
