Polishes are abrasives that can correct paint imperfections by removing small amounts of paint/clearcoat. Think of liquid sandpaper (an exaggeration in some cases but you get the point.) Wax provides a protective and gloss enhancing finish - no abrasives, though some derivatives have fillers that can temporarily mask imperfections in paint. If you don't understand the differences, you shouldn't be using any polishes yourself without reading up. Plenty of good sites out there with guides for beginners, including the videos posted in this forum.
