I really don't get it - they make the car totally isolated so you can't hear anything, then pump back in artificial sound. Wouldn't a better solution to be less insulation between the engine bay and the cabin? Same with the electric steering. They engineer all the feedback out and then try and add it back in.

I think in 20-30 years when we're all driving electric cars people will look back on this era of cars as the turning point of when people stopped caring about the driving experience and more about vanity and comfort. That's may be ok for some, but I'm not quite ready for it yet.
It isn't just insulation. It is also the nature of a turbo (which essentially sits in the way blocking the pipes that provide typical exhaust notes on an NA engine)

....and insulation is important in selling cars these days. Nobody wants to hear road noise, tire noise, etc.
