New Brakes Already...?

I'd been noticing a slight grinding noise when I backed out of my garage in the morning, but no other symptoms whatsoever. Decided to have the brakes looked at, since I do have the BBS wheels on and didn't want to find out something was rubbing due to the tight non-OEM fitment. I fully expected the "all clear and we changed your oil" phone call today, but instead I got the "your fronts need replacement and your rears are close" call. Damn, not even at 18K yet. And, as a rule, I usually go over 100K before I need brakes (which means in my 40+ years of driving I have rarely ever needed to have them done.). I do not drive this car hard at all. I know it has brakes that bite like crazy (almost too much, really), but is the trade off that you need new sets every 20K miles...?
