I used to own a E46 for 2 years and when potential buyers come and view my car, they were impressed with the new car smell that is still present in my car. The key is never eat in your car, never carry food in your car (properly wrapped food stored in the boot is ok), avoid sweaty/smelly clothing in your car (if after some workout you need to drive with your sweaty shirt, wind down the window with the AC on), never smoke in your car. But I would think the most important factor is to always keep the interior of the car clean with regular vaccuming and cleaning and moisturizing the leather of the seats and also wipe the dashboard with a slightly damped cloth. And now I'm repeating this process for my new E90:325i.
