I remember reading an article a few months back that volvo was researching how to keep the 'new car smell' for an extended amount of time and they actually found that the smell was toxic (at least at high levels for extended amounts of time). I think it was most likely because of all the glue and chemicals evaporating just like ivanwibi said earlier. Here is an interesting article from the BBC...
