17" Dunlop Wintersport 3D in 225 all around had worked perfectly for me. And in this size both tires and rims are very cheap. These tires are not hard core snow tires and may not be the best for fresh deep snow, but very close to all-seasons in performance and very confident on ice and packed snow - conditions much more likely for most drivers.
If I'd be getting winter tires now, I'd probably go with the same rim and same tire width but get a notch taller profile to get bigger overall wheel diameter and higher clearance - roads here are terrible and I bottomed out in several pot holes covered with water or thin ice this winter. It also looks better with slightly bigger than stock wheel diameter - the wheel fills the gap better.
