Diesel engine carbon buildup

I've noticed the engine usually hovers between 1-2K rpm most of my drive. Could be because of gearbox configuration. But wouldn't this cause a lot of carbon to buildup within the engine? I do however make sure to stretch till 4-5k rpm once in a while.
