Latest iOS on the iPhone?
If not, then ensure it is up to date
Then delete BT pairing on both BMW and iPhone, and re-pair from scratch, if you haven't already.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, my next suggestion is to reset and erase the iPhone, and restore from a back-up...but that's getting drastic.
