I have 20" run-flats on my X2. Coming from a 3 Series, it is night and day regarding noise and ride quality. Even with the 20s and low-profile Pirellis, the X2 is much quieter than the 3 Series. The cabin is quieter. The engine is much quieter. Ride quality is smooth and quiet and it handles great. I imagine 18's with a higher sidewall than the 20s would make it even better. No complaints at all with the ride quality/road noise of the X2, and that's with 20's.
