I am grateful for the advice set out in this thread. This evening I hardwired a dashcam into my X1 using fuse 65 and the easiest method I found to establish a ground was to remove the thin piece of trim below the glove box and to utilise the lefthand bolt (which passes through a dashboard metal bracket) holding the plastic trim below the glovebox. This negated the need to remove the glovebox.
